FX-8350 worth it for gaming? - Page 18

-Do YOU see the FX 8350 and up aging well with more games using more cores?
-Do YOU guys see Steamroller and up being another step in the right direction, or a barely increased performance over Piledriver?

First off, unless you have a monitor that can only display 60FPS, don't worry about bottleneck/second GPU.
As for your second question, when I bench cinema4d (CineBench) I get 7.5-8.5 with mine. I got an easy OC, I just need better cooling than my trash. I can go higher, probably get a 10 or 10.5.
For aging, this is a bit tricky. I would expect to see common 6 core gaming. With the AM3+ ready for 8 core CPU's, it is ready, and having the 8350 is great. This brings up the last question, AMD announced that it was going to release SR in 2013, and Excavator in 2014. The step between 81XX and 83XX is pretty high. Although the highest OC is on an 8120 (last time I checked, so don't yell at me) decent OC are easier and cooler on an 8350. I would hope the next step will be even easier (and future funding may help that).

So that is what I see when I look at AMD. The 8350 is a good choice, as is the I5 and I7, however my needs rely on 8 cores.

Now, I'm not just going to feed you my opinions without any backup. I'll spend the night benching my CPU and finding reliable sources to back everything up that I have said. Things may have changed since I stopped hunting the info on the 8350, so don't go off if some of this is wrong. I'm checking now.

EDIT: I've looked around... The new chip for 2013 seems to be a 20 core server chip, SR looks like 2014. Still looking though
EDIT: There is a SR chip for 2013, however it is an A series chip to carry Radeon 8000m on it.
EDIT: Looks like we will SR in 2014 for desktop as a massive upgrade. Quite a few places are saying that AMD is going to make it 28nm, boost individual core performance, and increase the L1 cache. So it should be a much bigger step than the last one. All the sources were AMD road maps/official AMD leaks.
EDIT: Just used CineBench. it gave me a 7.49 at my 4.5GHz OC. It seems that the 3570k (http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2012/05/01/intel-core-i5-3570k-cpu-review/3) gets 6.32 at stock and 8.22 at 5GHz. I left a few applications open. The orange score is with everything else closed, and only the minimum tasks running, the other scores are benches of mine at different speeds... The 5GHz was unstable. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I would like to get a 3570k owner to do some benchmarks, and I'll do the same ones and we can compare here. Also, if he has any suggestions for real world scenarios/benchmarks, I'll do them. It will be easier then arguing back and forth.

It's just a benchmark for the CPU. You can't just rely on benchmarks like these, but it can show some performance. But you also can't just go with gaming benchmarks either.
Now this is my computer on 100% stock, with the same idle programs I normally have on. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
This is weird, because I remember having more frames than that with my original tests... EVGA GeForce 660 BTW, and Turbo disabled on the CPU

Wow, I'm not sorting through all 13 pages of this page. tongue.gif

Anyway OP if you want my non-biased take on this. I think the 8350 is a GREAT CPU for gaming. I'm an AMD enthusiast myself. But there's a few reasons why you may want to go to Intel's side instead. I've said this before and I'll say it again.
  • AMD/8350 motherboards support up to a max of 1866Mhz memory. if you want to "futureproof" your system Intel may be the safer bet, trust me RAM is HUGE issue with AMD at least in my experience, when I go for higher speeds I lose stability big time
  • AMD boards do not support PCI Express 3.0 and won't for some time (graphics cards will still not bottleneck your system on 2.0 but still it's a minor setback)
[*[ The Intel i5 is slightly better, as it has better "per-core" performance rather than worrying about core count

If you can get past them things, go with AMD. Also there's one more thing I don't know if anyone else mentioned because I didn't read all the replies. Right now the 8350 is going to be the best AMD has to offer for quiet a while. The next set of AM3+ AMD's is slated for 2014, possibly NEVER from the article I read.

idk. my cheap grade is average for gaming compared to my intel rig. i get 7 in cinebench at 4GHz and 8 at 4.5 GHz unlock to hex but i think that the 8300s are better than my thuban in gaming. definitely the i5 ivy is better than my chip.

Cinebench isn't reliable. They put in code that docks your score if you have an AMD chip. I believe there is even a lawsuit against them right now.

Piledriver is a respectable step-up from Thuban and Bulldozer. FX-8320 is arguably the best price/performance processor in the market right now. Gaming performance margin between it and the i5-3570K is not as gaping as people and/or reviewers make it out to be. To some, the difference is negligible due to the smaller cost of Piledriver but to numbers junkies, the i5 will be the better choice.
