Powercolor 7970 overclocking woes

Thread Starter
Recently just purchased a powercolor 7970 and figured I'd have my way with overclocking it, after a bunch of testing at default vcore of 1175 i found the highest stable overclock I could achieve was 1050/1575 core and mem clock speeds

Naturally I want to increase this further but any attempts to increase the vcore to any amount 1200-1250 or otherwise make absolutely 0 difference in stability, I turn the voltage up and put the core clock speed at 1080 or 1100 and it starts to artifact really bad in both gputool and furmark, sometimes crashing the driver and others shutting my computer down. I've disabled ULPS in the registry and as far as I'm aware the voltages aren't locked.

Do I just get unlucky with the draw or am I missing something?

7970s are overclock bound by heat. After a certain point, around 1100mhz heat becomes the limiting factor. You want temps under 70c to prevent these issues.

what are your core and VRM temps . the temps are very important for higher clocks. so core temps below 70c and vrm temps below 90c are important. even then sometimes you might have a chip which does not overclock well. you are at the mercy of the silicon lottery.

The 'fets are naked so I can guarantee it's sky high. And that, OP, is likely your problem. The VRAM is also naked which doesn't help either.
