Killed my laptop. All laptops like this?

Thread Starter
I tried to upgrade my laptops CPU (The HDD/Ram are still on the way -.- be here tommorow) and I ended up breaking 3 different wires from the connectors (Or w/e you call them)

1. The keyboard
2. The touchpad
3. Some USB ports.

The connectors are still stuck and I feel like they are superglued to the motherboard, I've tried everythign to pull them out but no luck.

I wasnt even able to get the CPU in because I had to take out the motherboard and somehow flip it, and there was no way for me to do that without attempting to disconnect more wires which would at the end rip anyway.

Never touching the insides of a laptop again. So flimsy compared to desktops....

Oh and now it wont even turn on, but thats probably because the connectors are still connected the mobo but they dont lead anywhere.

Probably going to throw it out or just rip everyhting apart for the hell of it.

It's like they put the CPU in the absolute most diffucult place to reach on purpose, so just incase someone wanted to upgrade, they would have to buy a whole new laptop instead.

Are all laptops built with such low quality?

I took apart my T61 all the way down to the heatsink and re-pasted the CPU without much trouble. Different manufacturers build their laptops differently, even between different lines from the same manufacturer. Thinkpads are generally friendly to being taken apart. Apple on the other hand goes out of their way to prevent you from doing anything (using Torx screws on the casing, gluing the battery instead of using screws, I mean really?)

Having mechanisms for things to be removed does take up space, so especially on slimmer laptops things will be less take-apart-able as a general rule of thumb. On laptops that are very thin and light they generally won't make latches, caddies, rails, and whatever else is required to have removable parts because these things add bulk and weight, even if just a little.

Remember Laptop's are designed to be light, and mobile, so Quality can be considered Questionable in laptops. With this in mind, You have to be a lot more careful with a laptop than you would be with a desktop.

And Every laptop is different when taking them apart, but all of them are relatively similar as well, something I would suggest is keep your laptop and rebuild it a couple times, just to have some experience, and if you ever need to repair the inside of a future laptop.

Those go off to the side. (They aren't removable, just click then out of place)

Then you can pull off the ribbon cable.

Yup ribbon cables are delicate. Most laptops have them. My laptop is nice because the motherboard is installed with the CPU/RAM slots/most components facing down. So you remove the bottom cover and bam it's all there.

Most laptops, regardless of quality, have more delicate components inside. That's just the nature of having a compact system. Whenever you're taking one apart go slowly, make you know where all the connections are, and don't force anything. And trust me, ribbon cables are a lot harder to put in than take out.
