TLDR at bottom. Had a few drinks, so might be a slightly longer post than otherwise.

My main goal is to play Civ5 on a triple monitor setup in portrait: 3240x1920. I found this post (another thread) regarding this kind of setup though a bit more generalized.

As I understand it, Civ5 is a very CPU-heavy game. After reading that post I linked above, I was so set on buying a 7950 because of its higher memory BUS and VRAM compared to its competitors. However, I did a bit searching around today and found this:
  • Rage3D review of 7870, Civ5 in eyefinity setup: Link. The review claims that the reference 7870 runs Civ5 in eyefinity at average of 75fps and 28fps min.
  • Rage3D review of 7950, Civ5 in eyefinity setup: Link. This review claims the reference 7950 runs Civ5 in eyefinity at average of 75fps and 28fps min.

It has been a while since I have looked at graphics cards, but this seems rather strange to me. Is this right?

Regardless, I was undeterred! I looked around for anything that might shed light on if the extra cores and 1GB of VRAM would be worth the extra $100. I didn't find much, but it did get me thinking. I remember a while ago reading that 1GB of VRAM is enough for 1080p gaming. On that logic, 3GB should be enough for me to game on a triple-monitor setup while a 2GB would be bottlenecking. However, the above Rage3D review seems to contradict that. I assumed that memory scales linearly, which, for all intents and purposes, is a terrible assumption as few things in life are linear. I would be grateful if someone could explain/link me to a good walkthrough/documentation on how this works.

I still need to decide on whether or not to get 7800 or 7900 series cards.

Other games I may play on the side extremely casually (a.k.a. once in a fortnight): SC2, perhaps new SimCity due next year. I also may get 5 monitors at some point if the missus allows it - usually no - which means this is just icing on the cake if the card allows it to be played in a meaningful fashion*.

Would like to play games at 40+fps.

TLDR: found reviews of Civ5 in Eyefinity for 7950 and 7870 with the same results and is dangerously close to hurting himself in confusion and requires someone to clear that up! Also need to decide on what card to buy.

Thanks a bunch!!
