Motherboard or controller?

Thread Starter
Can I use the raid controller on my ASUS motherboard or do I need a raid controller card for a NAS build?
Going to use FREENAS ver8 software and ASUS M4A79XTD EVO motherboard.

IMO not needed as FREENAS software RAID is just awesome implementing ZFS and RAID Z.

FreeNAS is a software raid, so a hardware controller is definitely not needed, and even firmware (motherboard) raid won't be used with FreeNAS. Get the motherboard with as many SATA ports as you can, and if you need more then get PCIe SATA cards (just an HBA, not a controller).

Actually the board I want to use has 7 sata ports so I can use 6 1TB drives in either raid10 or raidz2, and one 80GB SSD for l2arc, with USB for the operating system. Just playing with parts laying around. Thank you for your help.
