Some CPU questions

Thread Starter
Right now I have a Cooler Master Hyper 212+ on my 2500k on a Corsair Obsidian 650D. How well would I be able to overclock it? I live at a pretty cold place so it helps a bit but the 650D doesn't have the best air flow. Should I just replace it with a 3570k with a H100? If I did, do I just replace it or do I do something with the BIOS? I've never upgraded before and this is my first computer built so I'm still a bit hazy

Also this is the thermal paste I used

When you applied the thermal paste, did you fill the exposed gaps between the heatpipes first as shown below?

Unfortunately, not filling in the gaps usually results in cooling performance that's not any better than the stock cooling.  It would be like taking a normal flat-based heatsink and carving deep grooves into it and then not filling those grooves.

So if you fill those gaps in nicely and use the two line method (their third method), then you should be able to get it to 4.5 GHz without too much trouble.

Alright, then what if I replace my 2500k with a 3570k? Will that require some tinkering with the BIOS or a reinstall of the OS or something? I was planning on doing this in the future anyway so I figured I could maybe do it now

you could overclock the hell outta a 2500k with 212+, even higher with H100. While 3570k overall is a more powerful chip, what do you plan to do mainly? If gaming, 2500k most likely not bottle necking anything.

And the 650d not having great airflow? With a bitfenix up front, and a gentle typhoon 1850 in the rear, case has great flow

Tinkering with BIOS as in changing voltage and multipler, yes, but nothing serious. Both work with 1155 mobo's, so no need for ugrade unless your mobo isnt OC'ing that great, or made for holding high voltages

I wouldn't replace the 2500k for 3570k unless you need pcie 3.0 for whatever reason that may be. I recently made the switch and I am limited in my OC quite a bit. I can't get past 4.7 on the 3570k with astronomical temperatures whereas I was able to do upwards of 5.0 on my 2500k with very acceptable temps.

I mean, you could get a gold 3570k that doesn't heat much or require lots of voltage but that's the silicon lottery.

You are right about the temps, but id say 4.7 IB = 4.9-5.0 SB, least fold for fold

BTW i see your running the UT60, working good? Looking for a rad for my 5870 rig

I actually was planning on getting a 7970 soon and my mobo does have a pcie 3.0 slot. The reason why I was going to do this was mainly because once Haswell comes by I'm going to be making a new computer and that was gonna be my main. I wanted this one to be as good as possible before I sell it to a friend.

if you haven't already purchased the CPU for your new rig, I would go 3570k, only because there almost the same price, and I cant advise buying last gen for same price
