Ewww, F3's? They are noisy and annoying. tongue.gif Plus, you realize all new Samsung hard drives are Seagate now right? Your statements are looking pretty contradictory to me now. biggrin.gif
They are going for that much because they are an older gen and they probably want to finish selling stock during sale season....

I know Samsung sold their HDD division to Seagate, don't mean the current Samsung Drives are crap.
Exactly whats wrong with the spinpoints? As long as you get the single platter 1tb spinpoint. They might be slightly loud, Though I doubt it is louder then the Hatachi 2tb drive in my Server, though if it is ohno-smiley02.gif it would be a pretty load drive. For the most part most of the Spinpoints out for sale are still Samsung made, Seagate made ones are making their way out though. Once Samsung Hard Drives are fully made by Seagate I will also will not buy from them unless I find it worthy. Also yes their are some bad cases for WD as well, but they are mostly for the Green drives which IMO should not be used for performance systems.

I was just stating that I have had a pretty high failure rate for the total number of seagate drives I have come past. Now is this is just a small amount of drives they ship, but if I can have so many seagate drives die from many different familys of seagate drives then something must be up and would hate to see the big picture. Every Brand has failures, to me It seems that seagate is just the weaker link. Everyone has their own personal opinion and experiences, mine just happen to be mostly negative to seagate. Not trying to sound like a WD fanboy cause i'm not, but they sure do make the best hard drives IMO.

And to be honest the Seagate Drive that OP picked out really isnt that bad, it is one of the more reliable seagate drives.

Loud, they hummm a lot. lol

Samsung made F3's where not 1TB/platter. They were 2 500GB platters.

They have been out for a while now. They are just barracuda's with Samsung stickers from what I see...

Well, yes we do. Seagate used to hold a huge percentage of the market - some people say as high as 65%? Now they're down around 40%? (WD has over a 50% share - they ship more drives than Seagate and Hitachi/Toshiba combined? Wait, don't they still manufacture the HGST/Toshiba drives? I wonder if that factors in?)

Probably not, it could just be that the Toshibas are the same drive just cheaper or they have better bulk sale deals..
What DuckiHo is trying to say is that no OEMs or data centers using Seagates or a falling trend. While there is a small loss, it's not enough to say that it's a trend and you have no evidence as to why these numbers are falling and you're even unsure what these numbers mean.

I've had three WD drive failures, one Hitachi, and one Seagate that was DOA *shrug*.

My Bro's Seagate 7200rpm 2.5 laptop drive has failed 3 times in the last two years. I have had both of my external Seagate hard drives die, also had a Hitachi drive die as well. Also have a box of Old IDE drives, most of the seagates have sector errors. Also many of my friends have had Seagates go bad on them. Also almost every time I fix someones laptop with a bad hard drive, guess what brand it's packing. While not every Seagate hard drive is bad, just the company just has pretty high failure rate overall. I have only had a single WD go bad in my entire life, and it wasnt even mine but a friends. Also you can pretty much go on newegg and see all the negative comments on seagate drives, while not all are bad some drives can be pretty bad.

Sounds like user error...
Statistically speaking, Seagate drives are in most OEM computers... chances are you're gonna find them more than not. It's only been recently (maybe last 3-5 years) that I've seen a prevalence of other vendors like Hitachi and WD in OEM systems.

Anyway, I've been running two 320GB drives from the same line for the past year or so in raid 0, as well as four 3Tb XTs in raid 1 (two groups), no problems at all. Don't expect any either.

I'd suspect that myself, if I hadn't experienced it personally. Three Seagate drives died a total of 8 times on me. Luckily back when it happened they had 5 year warranties... but I've never trusted Seagate RMAs after that experience.

I have a 0% failure rate with WD RMAs so far. (Also 3 drives - not statistically significant)

I've purchased at least 40-50 drives over the past 8 years. Probably more. I've had ~12-15 HDD failures. (Depending on if you count out of warranty failures...) and 2 SSD failures. 8/12 of the within-warranty HDD failures being Seagate is pretty bad, but again not statistically significant. It does however mean that it's not user error, as I treat all my drives roughly the same - there are a lot of bad batches being released from time to time.

Edit: Actually, I guess I'm close to 55-60 drives now. I just purchased ~4 more Momentus XT drives, and I couldn't stop myself from buying a 3TB Seagate 7200.14 @ $90. I've heard they finally increased their warranty back to 2 years, so that's good. smile.gif

I've heard they finally increased their warranty back to 2 years, so that's good. smile.gif

Exactly, a handful of drives is not a significant figure, period.
I mean, somebody saying they deal with thousands or even just hundreds of drives and saying they have 20% of their Seagate stock have to be rma'd while only 5% of their WD stock, that's actual data. Fixing a couple drives for friends ect is not much of a argument.

Don't expect any either.

i have a 7 year old 80 gb cuda that's still working
