Radiator Fans Intake or Exhaust.

Thread Starter
Hello all I'm fairly new here and looking for some advice.

I know i will be keeping my front 280mm Rad as intake,

Now for the top 240mm Rad, will having that as an intake be better considering it will be pulling cool air through the radiator? keep in mind i have a rear 140mm fan exhausting heat.

I know heat rises. Is it better for the top rad to be exhausting heat away from the rest of my components?

Thanks =)

Sorry for my poor painting skills. Case is a Arc Midi

I have all my radiators and front fans as intake and a single 140mm for exhaust. It seems to be cooler that way.

Thanks for the reply. I'll make them both intake then, The rear fan should be plenty to exhaust the heat.

Front/Bottom of the case make intake.

Back/Top of the case make exhaust.

Simple as! Happy cooling. thumb.gif
There has always been discussions about that what is better, and the story is long.
Bottom/front for intake for sure, and nobody seem to argue about that, but the top is a different story.

For lower ambient temps use the top as an exhaust.

For better rad performance use the top as intake, just make sure you put a dust filter on top, otherwise your case will get very dirty in a short time.

I am personally using the top as an exhaust, but only because I cannot put a dust filter on top of the fans (no space), otherwise I would use them as intake too, but clean of dust case is more important for me than 1-2*C lower coolant temps.

Another thing is I am not sure that you will be able to fit a full size rad and a fan on top of your case. It really depends if there is anything sticking out on your mobo preventing you from doing that. I could not do that as VRM heatsinks were there, so I had to buy myself a bigger case biggrin.gif

They are both slim rads so they fit smile.gif

Dust is a big problem where I live so maybe exhausting would be the way to go. I don't mind the slight temp change. Thanks for the reply

Some say that positive pressure created by many intake fans will allow the dust to be removed by 1 exhaust fan, but that was not the case in my build... Tried that and got all covered with a thin layer of dust within days. Maybe the pressure was not big enough... smile.gif

A little logic here. Filter on exhaust fan? Too late for a filter, don't you think?

I have had my top mounted rad use both. I found little difference in inside temps or water temps. I did notice a much better ability to keep dust at bay by using filters and controlling where the air comes in by ensuring positive pressure.

I did not mention a dust filter on the exhaust wink.gif Maybe I was not precise enough... I meant that when I used the top fans as intake I had 1-2*C coolant temps lower comparing to the exhaust, but I also had everything covered with dust as I could not fit filters...
