New IEMs on Boxing Day

So I'm getting ready to replace my iM716s. I love the amount of detail they have, but the trebble is a little lacking but the bass is actually fine, I prefer detail over exaggerated bass. I'm wondering what I should upgrade to that improves on the detail and maybe a bit more flat response or a little on the trebble side.

I was thinking the Etymotic ER-4S or the RE272. But what other suggestions are there that are within that pricing?

The 272s are currently on sale, too!

[edit] oh, the iM716s are no different then the ER-4S apparently?

Maybe I'll just play with the eqilizer and stick with my original play and grab the Q701s on boxing day.

My favorite IEMs in this price range are the Monster Turbine Pro Coppers, the Vsonic GR07s and Westone 4. I've heard good thing about the Etymotics and the RE272 is all right, but I'd choose the others before it.

I think I'll end up grabbing both or just going with the one. Keep the 240s for gaming and then the other for music.

The pros need that "special fit" in order to sound good by my understanding. The GR07s are looking nice, but the lack of treble is just going to yield similar presentation to my iM716s.

I'm definitely getting back in the mood of looking for new IEMs. More suggestions would be appreciated. Budget is around 300 (Canadian) and I definitely want to keep the detail but add a bit more body to the sound. Maybe a little more soundstage as well. The westones might be the direction I'm heading. And something that is definitely comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

[edit] Audio-Technica ATH-CK10 <- I think those are what I'm really looking for. I really want a lot of micro-detail.

Or maybe the dba 02 mk2?

hmmm..I'm really leaning towards these. I wonder if they'll be an upgrade, though?

well well well ... I found out that I can import some q701s for 270 while at the lowest priced place in Canada I can get them for 360 with free shipping. I wonder if I should jump on this?

They are having a 50 percent off sale...

Not a good buy at 270, IMO.

Westone 4 has a decent soundstage, but is rather flat (linear) frequency response. It is VERY neutral. The upside is that it will never sound fatiguing or harsh. I ended up getting the HRT MusicStreamer-II and Audinst AMP-HP to help compensate for the lack of low-end bass- the dual low-end drivers just needed a little encouragement. Also, I wish the stems were a little longer, although the Shure tri-flange tips work very well here. Finally, the cord is extremely well-built, but the plastic shell seems a little cheap to me (for the given price range).

On the other hand, ER-4P/4S is clearly treble-oriented. It is just a little bright, and has 'sparkle'. To a certain extent, it can even sound harsh depending on the material you are listening to (e.g. you will hear sibilance in poorly-mastered recordings that suffer from dynamic range compression). However, the level of detail-retrieval is second to none in the price range. The isolation is incredible. You will need an amp with the ER-4S.

The review there showed the ER4S to be no different in the curve then the iM716s, which is odd. Maybe they never had a good amp. One the side, I saw another review showing that they were exactly like you were saying.

Eh, considering how they are normally 400+ in Canada, I ended up grabbing them. I'll stick with the 716s for now unless I end up lucking out on something again. I got these for 50 bucks. smile.gif

Why not try to buy them used on headfi and have an American ship them to you?
