5870 Fan rattle - [Video]

What can I do about this?

A lot of people get this problem, it is when something (usually dust) clogs the brushes or mechanisms on the fan.

One way to fix it is so take the shroud off the card and remove the fan from its mounts, it should have a screw or something somewhere and it will lift off its sleeve to show the fan motor. Clean this and it will fix the problem.

If the card is still in warranty then you could also RMA it.

I was unable to show the bare motor, it was hidden underneath the read fan cover inside the heat sink shroud. The whole card was disassembled then cleaned and the fan was lubed. I then plugged the fan into a header on my motherboard and it spun up; quite quickly I add with no noise.

Re-assembled and the noise is back.

I have two of them so my computer isn't exactly crippled.

Try to put pressure on the power cable and see if the noise disappear/reduces.

Oh don't do it like that. Its really easy to ruin the motor. A much better way to fix the bearing is to do it the way I did it.

Just follow my guide --> The XFX 4890 post 2 year reference cooler fan bearing service

It's literally like $10 on ebay to get a fan and then just pop it in thumb.gif

I had this exact problem with my Reference 5850 and fixed it as well.
I've never seen the 'drilling into plastic' fix and doesn't look like a good solution.

I basically disassembled my video card and separated the parts of the fan via this method:

Skip to 1:40 for the separation demonstration:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kH8spGRL3Yk

Once I had the pieces separated, I removed some metal filings out of the motor base sleeve.
I lubricated the sleeve and the shaft with Chain oil and put it back together. (Purposed for motorcycles, but worked great for me.)
Since then I haven't had an issue with the noise.

During my attempt of removing the triangular cover, one of the corners snapped off.

Just bought this... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180770837403&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:US:3160

Gonna be out of a second card for 2-3 weeks it seems.

Well you could do this rolleyes.gif

But in all seriousness, as others are saying replacements can be had on Ebay pretty cheap/
