[TechSpot] The Best Graphics Cards: Nvidia vs. AMD Current-Gen Comparison - Page 15

People still using drivers as an excuse to buy Nvidia cards, is really puzzling. If you like Nvidia, sure, go a head and buy an Nvidia card. Doesn't change the fact that AMD is better though.

I've had many more people come into my shop with Nvidia driver problems than AMD problems since the 6k series from AMD. Seriously anyone who continues to use that excuse needs to catch up with the times.rolleyes.gif

Basically you choose between:
NV
  • FXAA
  • PhyX
  • CUDA
  • 3D
AMD
  • Faster when both OCed to max
  • 1440p+/High(8X) MSAA
  • Eyefinity
  • Price/Performance

If i wanted 3D i would not even blink and get Nvidia. AMD 3D is horrible. They need to make their own software not not 3rd part.
The problem with 3D is a bit expensive and most people dont really like it.

Isn't 3D included in Direct X 1.11 though? Shouldn't be a problem anymore with W8.

Why don't I see a 7990 in there? It would blow away any of nvidia's cards

LOL thanks but i am trading it in shortly for a TL or used M3 sedan perhaps.

Yes it is good to see fierce competition and AMD to hold the crown for once but we should be enjoying our cards more instead of fighting over a few frames per second lol.

Wrong. Wrong that is according to futuremark.com mark 3dmark11 Fastest system on the planet 4-680's.

Because we all play 3DMark all day long, it's the game of 2011.

In the real world, HD7970s are faster because they scale nearly as well, are now faster OOTB, OC equally if not slightly better while also gaining more from that OC thanks to a lack of nVidia's cheaty style GPU Boost. (Which essentially puts OCed Kepler against stock Tahiti)

In the end of the day what ever makes them happy.

Yeah, I can see reasons to go nVidia (3D is tonnes better, multi-card support is better when you play recent games all the time, better driver options, etc) but when people pull out PhysX that's the weakest reason ever, especially when this 9800GTX+ I have costs barely anything used, doesn't need much power and can run drivers alongside AMD cards iirc.

Sort of ironic how Nvidia sells cards based on software features, while AMD sells cards based on hardware potential. rolleyes.gif

Eyefinity is mostly software once you have the display outputs for 6 screens.

I'd love 3D, honestly, but considering I could get an IPS 2560x1440 screen for the same price as a 1080p 120Hz screen I'll take 1440p over it any day.

Yeah.. while I'm happy for AMD this round... it's brought out some of the worst in these forums.

The author stupidly focuses on the 650 Ti being faster than the 7770 and 7750, as if he were the first person to discover this. It's a well known fact. Really, it'd be quite a massive engineering failure on Nvidia's part if it didn't beat out the 7770 by a decent margin. It's also a well known fact that it costs significantly more to manufacture (see die sizes) and consequently has a significantly higher cost to the consumer as well.

He moronically suggests that he'd "gladly pay more" for the 650 Ti's extra performance, but of course completely ignores the fact that the 7770 has better performance per dollar, and that the 7850 also offers better performance per dollar. Has he not heard of the 7850 1GB? Why not "gladly pay more" for that? He just comes off as being biased this way. I don't know what his silly obsession is with the 650 Ti, but a much better way of putting it would be to assert that the 650 Ti is the highest performing $150 card. He finally makes this claim in his conclusion, but only after he's painted a terrible picture of the 7770, as if it were supposed to equal the 650 Ti on performance.

I really can't believe how much of a fool he made of himself for that. Otherwise the article is great; I just can't figure out what his obsession was with the 650 TI.

Unreleased products are such a great indicator of who's in the lead... why don't you argue from where Nvidia's strengths actually lie? Like market share, or in their ability to generate a profit, etc. There's some peace of mind in not having to worry about a company — and therefore your driver and warranty support — going under. I believe they also have the better 3D gaming support right now, and I also believe they have the better switchable graphics implementation as of right now.

And you would also have to convince your audience that the high end is all that matters, which is definitely not the case. If it were, wouldn't AMD be stomping all over Nvidia right now? They are in the lead, as far as single GPU cards go.

There is a certain part of the die that is devoted to outputting to multiple screens. If you read back on the original release of the 5870, AMD had a different code name for the technology that it gave to each vendor so it could figure out if one of the companies leaked the info before launch. However, AMD did say that it was a hardware feature, which explains why Nvidia was unable to duplicate the technology on Fermi without the use of multiple cards. The software does have to support it, but the hardware has to support it before you can write the software for it. thumb.gif
