Not an "enthusiast" , but worthwhile to make a small upgrade to my video card?

Thread Starter
Currently running an older i5 750 paired with a radeon 6850. I'm running 2x 24" monitors and the most demanding game I play is Guild Wars 2. I've had to turn my settings down quite a bit to maintain a high frame rate and I'm thinking about getting a new video card.

I usually build a new computer every ~2-3 years or so but I'm still quite satisfied with my current rig and don't see much of a need to build a new computer.

How much would I have to spend in order to get a worthwhile upgrade over my 6850?
I was thinking about $200 but I'm not sure if it's worth my while. Would there be any bottlenecking issues with my CPU? I've pushed the CPU close to 4ghz stable several years back but I reverted it because I didn't need the extra speed.

Thanks all!

That i5 at 4 GHz is still a perfectly good processor for gaming, upgrading form the 6850 on the AMD side, I wuold recommend at least a 7870, but a 7950 would be a much bigger improvement. going from a 6850 to a 7870 might not be worth the price of a new GPU. I'm not sure about the Nvidia side of things though.

Hey IMHO you could spend less than $200 and get a very worthwhile upgrade. You can get a used 580 for around that much. Or if your only wanting AMD you could get a 6950/70 for the same price. Also you could get a mid range of current gen but I would buy top tier last gen if it were my money.

The cpu you using is fine especially if you can overclock it to 4GHZ, Can't wait to see what you get or decide. biggrin.gif

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll take a look at my local listings for used stuff and see if I can find a used 580 or similar.

selling your HD 6850 should get you 90 - 100 bucks. add another 200 bucks and get a HD 7950

Sapphire HD 7950 boost
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202006

the boost card comes with higher stock voltage (1.25v). easily overclocks to 1.1 - 1.15 Ghz at stock voltage. HD 7950(1.15 Ghz) is faster than HD 6950 CF. it will be a massive upgrade for you. 2x - 2.5x perf over the HD 6850.

investing in a used HD 6970 card or GTX 580 for 200 bucks is a very poor choice. when you get a new card which crushes the HD 6970 / GTX 580 for just 100 bucks more with full warranty and with 3 amazing games worth 150 bucks whats there to not like. I have completed Sleeping dogs and can say its a very nice game. Farcry 3 and Hitman Absolution are also getting good reviews. thumb.gif
