Appraisal: Server price/help

Hey OCN, my friend is asking me if I want to buy his server for @285 and I was wondering if it is a steal, to me it looks so but I want a second opinion, here are the specs:
Qty. 1 - custom whitebox server
Corsair high airflow server case - purchased from CompUSA
Qty. 2 x 500GB 7200 RPM WDBlack SATA hard drives
Qty. 3 x H8DME-2 high end server motherboard
Qty. 8 x 2GB DDR2 ECC REG server memory (16GB RAM total)
Qty. 2 x AMD opteron 2.4GHz 2200 CPU (dual quad cores)
Dual Gigabit ethernet ports
Onboard Video
1000W modular high end power supply
6 total modular hard drive bays
8GB SSD Kingston drive
6 onboard SATA Ports
Onboard SATA RAID controller
(each spare motherboard includes 2 dual core AMD opteron CPUs and 2 sticks of memory)

is this worth the $285 to buy it? How much would these even sell for If i wanted to sell it, being it is so old?

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a steal. A quick search on ebay (for opteron no less)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-DL385-64-bit-Server-2-Dual-Core-Opteron-2-4GHz-12GB-RAM-6-146GB-30Day-Warnty-/370697043277?pt=COMP_EN_Servers&hash=item564f43fd4d

is similarly specced I think, and a bit cheaper. Also are you planning to run said server 24/7. At this point you might decide it is better to invest more $ upfront and save on the powerbill.

I recently rebuilt a Q6600 rig running 24/7 @ 150W idle -> 33W idle. This rig will actually pay for itself in power savings in just 3 years in my country! That is less than the expected life of the computer.

Personally I would identify what it is you wanted the server to do, and spec a machine accordingly.

it would be for folding. But if you look I get 2x quad core operatrons and 4x dual core operatron with 3server boards

Where you state it's a custom white box server, but 3 motherboards...so it was implied that it was a single computer, which means a single motherboard. For the price, you are getting a lot of equipment...but if you don't need that equipment, I wouldn't bother. Yes that stuff would fold, how well...I don't know. I don't think it would be worth the power consumption.

The 1000w PSU and 2x 500GB drives could easily be recycled into other builds, but the RAM and CPUs are pretty much going to stay with that board. If you wanted to build a file streaming server, you would have the equipment.

It really just depends on if you need it or not. For what you are getting, I'd try to get it for $250 if I could.

I would only grab it for $250, but that's me, it would make a decent folding machine, but it would use a lot of power...
