I5-3210 + GT650M VS. I7-3610QM + GT640M?

Thread Starter
Well, I'm just curious. I'm gonna buy one of those set-ups and wondering if what would be the best bang for the buck? They have both 8GB RAM and 15.6" 1336x768 screen.

USAGE:
Heavy Gaming
Heavy Video Encoding/Editing
Programming
Photoshop
and some blender 3d biggrin.gif

What's your budget? That'll help us all a bit better.

What are you more concerned about doing? Gaming or Video Encoding? That's the ice-breaker.

The i5/GT650M is better for gaming.

The i7/GT640M is better for video.

If you're only gaming at 1366*768 at 650M should eat through everything you throw at it. The i5 shouldn't really affect your gaming performance (unless your running really CPU intensive games such as Battlefield 3 Multiplayer or Shogun 2 etc) but as he said the i7's hyper threading capability could really give your media production workflow a boost! thumb.gif

So if it's at 720p for gaming, I would just go for the i7/GT640M machine. The 640M is about on par with the GTX 460M from previous generations, but that'll drive 720p like a boss. biggrin.gif

For most games the 640m is good at 720p but not for all games. Planetside 2 (just came out last week) requires a ton of resources. I have a laptop with a 645m and Ivy Bridge i5. At 720p, on medium settings PS2 averages about 35fps. In intense firefights fps drops to close to 20.

I advise the OP go for a LT with a 660m instead. Its about 25% faster than the 640m.

Planetside 2 makes a GTX 580 cry. I don't think it's accurate to toss up the newest games when talking about the budget GPUs here. tongue.gif

I'm personally saying the Core i5 one. Mine plays BF3 on medium settings at ~35fps no problem and that's with a GT555m GPU. More balanced between the CPU and GPU.

Yes however, that's why the AMD APUs aren't selling well, because games will make better use of a good CPU almost as well as a good GPU.

The i7 is worth it. I've got a first gen mobile i7 and it's SICK. Crazy fast even today.

Note: If the 650m is of the DDR3 variety, it's just an overclocked 640m.
