Well i have some bad news for people.

I've sent my DD R9 290's back to the store due to the immense heat they were pumping into my case when under full load for a few hours.

Will update you guys with how it goes but i'm thinking about switching to another brand tbh.

so is everyone here fine with me running the thread or would someone else prefer to take over? smile.gif

Hello Sgt Bilko. I believe we're following each other on twitter, I'm DanDuke641.
I need to join the club but my 290X DD is presently being RMA'd back to Newegg for the black screen reboot.

My 290X pumped out enough heat for me to start thinking about new case fans.
What brand are you thinking to replace them with?

I've read through a lot of the thread and I'm personally fine with you taking over.

Yep, that would be me smile.gif

It's all good man, you can submit your pic's when you get the card back thumb.gif

As for the card, well i'm thinking about an R9 290x Lightning for now but i'm still undecided overall.

I love the XFX cards, they look great, run well and i never had any issues apart from the heat but it was the heat that made me decide to send them back.

I really don't mind running the thread i just wanted people's opinions on it because i'm not an XFX DD/Black owners anymore tongue.gif

Hi Everyone, not in the club yet, but kind of a GPU noob here with some questions. I'm about to upgrade my ASUS GTX 660 Ti to a XFX R9 280X in order to get two mini Displayport connectors (I know it's frowned upon here, but I am a Hackintosh user and I really want to use 2 Apple Cinema Displays that need Mini Displayport).

I think compatibility with Hackintosh with the R9 Series is a bit shaky, but I want to give it a shot.

Anyway, I'm a little confused with the power requirements. It says it's an 6+8 pin power requirement, and the cables that come with it are two 6 pin connectors that combine into an 8 pin, then 2 molex that turn into one 6 pin. I'm pretty sure my PSU can connect to this because I actually have two 8 pin's running through my 660 Ti (well, it takes two 6 pins but I just connected the 8 pins and left off the extra two). I have a Seasonic 650W G Series and it says i have "PCI-E 8/6 Pin X 4.

I guess my question is: do I have to use the connectors they supply? Or can I just use a 6 and an 8 pin if I have those already with my power supply? Also, there seems to be some discrepancy on power requirements, the site says 500W PSU but people are saying it needs 750W. Any input is appreciated!

Edit: Oops, sorry, one more question. I have an EK water cooling kit that has this little metal plate to hold the pump/reservoir (picture included). The only way I think this card will fit is if I unscrew 2 screws, and the little metal plate that holds it up will most likely touch the back of the card. Just wondering if having metal directly touching the GPU will harm it in any way. Not to sound overly lazy, but I don't really feel like moving the pump/reservoir because I'd have to redo my tubing!

You don't have to use the connectors they supply with the card, they are usually just Molex - PCIe 8/6 pin connectors in case your PSU doesn't have them.

But if your PSU does then by all means use them instead smile.gif

As for the metal plate, if that was me i wouldn't risk it but i suppose a thermal pad between the card and plate would be fine so long as you cover all of the parts they would make contact.
You don't want it accidentally shorting out on you redface.gif

EDIT: as for the power requirements, you have a good quality PSU and you'll be fine with one card, if you went for Crossfire then i'd say 750w minimum thumb.gif

Hey Sgt Bilko, sorry for the late response, but thank you for your insight. I ended up getting the XFX Double D R9 280X about 2 weeks ago. Was able to use the direct connections from my PSU into the card. Although my PSU is only 650w, I think it's a pretty good quality one (Seasonic) and I haven't run into anything unusual when running the card under load. I do have a Killawatt and if my GPU is under load, total wattage is around 330w (if I push my CPU, I think it would be close to 400w).

Luckily, the card did fit JUST underneath that metal plate, so no need for anything in between. Running two monitors via mini Displayport, and working really well.

The only thing that's going on, and not sure if it's the card or something else, is that I get some stuttering when playing certain games. I also get a lot of stutter when running Furmark in OS X, but in Windows, it seems to run fine. When I do play games though, I'm using my Windows drive, and it's a very slow HDD. It's nothing unbearable, but I'll probably read up on it. Other than that, everything is great.
