I wouldn't roll back, the beta drivers offer a lot of improved performance in many games I believe.

Maybe you have a bad card though ? I'm really not sure.

That was one of my first thoughts as well, so I returned the card and got a replacement. Same problems frown.gif

I realize the beta drivers give some performance boosts, but in the interests of keeping things as stable as possible I elected to stick with 13.1 for now. Once I get these problems sorted I'll move to 13.2 and OC the card, but before I move off of "as stable as possible" I want to know this problem is dealt with.

It might be annoying; but just send it back as an RMA, and if it happens again ring them up for sure, see if they can rectify the problem.

Hello,
I own a 7970ghz edition Double D and I am having some problems with it, in most of the games. I made a thread in this section with extensive infos, then I noticed this topic. My problem is that in almost every game, the GPU throttles like hell, resulting in non smooth frame rates.

I tried several version of the drivers, each time with a clean install. Tried to install on a freshly formatted system, nothing.
The only thing that helps a little with the throttling is to set powertune at 20%
I was suggested that it might be a VRM issue (I have the DD cooler revision, the one that just reads R7900 series on the plate) but I kept the fan at 100% for a while, to ensure I was going to test it with the card as cold as it could be. But with MSI kombustor, GPU throttling would start immediately if powertune was at 0% whereas with it at 20% no throttling would occur, that makes me think is not the VRMs.

However, in games apparently, not even the 20% powertune is enough, as in some intensive scenes, the throttle will start again. I don't know what to think if it's a faulty card, or my PSU. Anyone has any idea?

Same problem twice in a row though? (I already returned the card once) That makes me think it might be something else, but I'll be damned if I know where to look next...

Same problem twice doesn't mean there isn't a problem with the card when it comes to XFX. The card in my machine is an XFX7970 Ghz. it is my THIRD ONE in less than 1 month. Each RMA was confirmed defective. I will never again buy from XFX. RMA the card, it wouldn't hurt and you have nothing to lose. Call them before RMA and request them to pay the shipping.

Almost forgot. Be absolutely sure you can isolate the problem to the GPU. Go to a best buy and abuse the 30 day return policy, buy new ram, PSU, GPU and run them with the PC, see if the problem is still there. Then swap in your old parts one at a time until problem happens. Then you will know which part truly has the issue before you RMA

By the way, if you still have the problem after new gpu, psu ram = bad mobo.

Hope this helps smile.gif

Yeah... I may just have to RMA it as you guys suggest. Unfortunately I didn't know that you have to register for their warranty though, so I may have ****ed myself there. Has anyone ever been in that situation, or know how lenient they are/aren't?

I actually have a spare box that I'll just toss the card into to isolate the GPU. I didn't want to do that since I'll have to swap out the PSU too, (I have a spare) but it's easier than buying and returning a whole new PC.
