Why are people using Windows 8 - Page 5

I just build a computer for my parents, and installed windows 8 on it.

Overall it's quite a nice OS. It boots quickly, installed nicely, and once you get the hang of it is quite user friendly.

The first thing I noticed was a lack of the "Start" button. This means you either need to move your mouse to the upper corner of the screen and type/click one of the few buttons there, or use the microsoft button on your keyboard. The widgets on the page are a fresh look, but will take some getting used to.

I found the alt-tab method of switching windows is the easiest way in 8...I'm not a huge fan but it's not too big of a deal to rely on that method for quick painless window switching.

one of my biggest pet peeves is the lack of drivers for current/slightly aged printers. This led to me having to purchase a new printer for my parents, adding to the overall cost of the build. Luckily Dell.com was having a good sale! smile.gif

I will tinker with the computer more over winter break when I am back home, but for anyone looking for a new look, some nice innovations, and a change of scenery, give it a shot, you just might like it biggrin.gif

Well thanks all, I didn't think there'd be this many responses. I'd change, but all those "I have a problem with Windows 8" threads put me off.

If you let stuff like that put you off, you might have a hard time with other things besides a simple OS switch. Not everything is going to be perfect someone is always going to have a problem with something and complain about it.

I upgraded from Vista to 7 because I really appreciated the new UI. Ironically enough, I won't be upgrading to Windows 8 because I despise the new UI.

It was nice on the touch screen I saw it on, I'll admit on my parents' computer i didn't love installing everything and navigating around. On the touch screen it's so much nicer!

I made the change, and it really isn't as bad as I thought it would be. Things I thought I wouldn't care about such as the metro UI, and app store are enticing to me, and my games run a tad better from what I can surmise. Maybe placebo, but everything runs great and has breathed fresh life into my aging laptop. Will put Win8 on my desktop as soon as I can.

got myself a $32 annual membership with IEEE, and got access to 4 Windows 8 keys. plus a bunch of other Microsoft full version softwares. MSDNAA/Dreamspark. Worth the bang in my buck .

installed windows 8, didn't realize it recognized my HDMI TV as my main screen going thru setup, but I figured it out. installed video drivers, set up my triple screen setup , everything worked fine. MetroUI will show on my main display only , my other two screens, if on, will display my extended desktop . I can maneuver in and out of my desktop screen and metroui with the window key. or going to the bottom left corner. how hard is that ? developers have created a script or tiles for easy access to shut down your computer. you can have it as a tile or in your right click menu on your desktop. no really, actually shuts down. not just hibernate. pretty much its windows 7 + metro UI . you can even disable it with third party program. or use it. customize your metro UI, the apps in the windows store will only get better and bigger. switch in and out of desktop and metroUI .

everything works so far. nothing is broken. think of your metroUI as your start button menu. put everything you would ever use in your start screen as a tile . for people who use run, cmd, disk management, control panel. you can right click on the bottom left corner of your desktop and a beautiful and useful menu appears.
