500K...lol, no thanks.

By the time this dump has 8 billion people, I'll be living in the middle of the Canadian tundra in a wooden cabin

Living on Mars would probably be like living in Arizona. Except colder, and no one asking for your birth certificate. biggrin.gif

If I had 500K to blow, I'd rather blow it on a sexy car, some good nights, a godly tv setup up and PC, and laugh at all the morons spending the same money to live in dirt on a barren planet while aliens come out of no where and probe their bottoms

Still a plausible source of power though. One I actually hadn't really considered.

The problem with wind power is that it's inconsistent. You can have a calm day and get almost no power at all- making you need a backup that can handle your peak power output. Wind power would only be used if you wanted to offload the load when you do have the wind... I don't imagine they would bother with wind power if they had a good nuclear setup. Especially considering all materials will have to come from Earth for quite awhile.

I know you're joking, but people who want to do this don't "have 500k". They would probably have to sell their house and car, and everything they have to go. That works well for going to mars, but probably not the best idea to do that to get a "godly TV setup" tongue.gif.

my only concern would be cosmic radiation, and bone degradation. no one really knows the long term effect of cosmic radiation, what happens if a huge solar flare hits, will you be cookied alive in your biodome or will you come down with some crazy form of cancer? living on mars with lower gravity would mean your bones will become much weaker, which further limits the chances of ever returning to earth.

I'd assume power would be solar, or nuclear, perhaps each household will have its own mini reactor, or generator. something similar to whats on curiosity but at bit larger scale.

I agree. Why is everyone always so captivated by Mars? It seems like since the dawn of recorded astronomy it's always been Mars people cared about.

Seems to me setting people up on the moon would be so much easier, cheaper and just plain beneficial in the long run.

Put it this way, If I had 500k I would go to the moon w/o even thinking twice. I would not however agree to go to Mars. I just wouldn't. I also know I cannot be the only person who thinks like that. If he changed this up to the moon the money and people agreeing to go would probably start poring in.

you have to get the supplies into orbit no matter what, so your still going to use the same amount of fuel, using the moon for cargo storage or a rally point is just a big waste of resources. once in space there is no atmosphere so no resistance, a straight shot to mars with the supplies is way more efficient. keep in mind, changing momentum wastes a ton of fuel, so stop land stop land would not work. think about it, you gotta drop it off at the moon, leave the moon, then later on have another rocket land, pick up the supplies, then leave again turning what would be 1 trip into 4 trips. (referring to shutting supplies to mars via the moon)

then you don't fit the targeted audience?

The moon has neither an atmosphere nor the soil to allow for self sustainability.

Can you live there? Potentially. Can you settle a self-sustainable colony? Not necessarily.
