I have Windows Home Server 2011. I want to backup my clients to different locations/drives; i.e. laptops to one drive (external), PCs to another, etc... How do I set this up?

Thanks!

I'm not really up on WHS 2011. I install and configured it for a family member this weekend.

From what I saw you install the connector from the server via http://your-server-ip/connect

Then you can go into the console and configure backups and destinations.

Here is the one I setup this weekend:

As far as I know WHS 2011 doesnt really work that way. As stated above you install the connecter on any client machines that you wish to link to the homeserver. This allows backup/remote desktop*/updates etc. This allows you to setup backup on these client machines, the backups will be stored on the WHS 2011 box itself.

*assuming you have a windows version that supports it.

From there you can choose to backup WHS 2011 to an external harddrive ... though this is a little limiting. The drive must be formatted as NTFS, but the real problem is that the backup data is stored in the VSS (Volume Snapshot Service) section of the NTFS partition. Essentially what this means is that the WHS 2011 backup data is hidden from view making it hard to get the backup offsite without physically remove that harddrive.

I am not aware that you can specify different backup locations for different clients.

Hmm. Okay, thanks guys. I'm gonna investigate more; maybe post a couple of screen shots for clarity.

When backing up WHS itself it required me to use an external drive (it lists the drives you can use, and the only one available was an external I had on there).

But, it also creates a "client back up" "folder". The client backups can go wherever you put that folder. All I want to do is give it more of those "folders" as options.

I'm at work, and my Android RDP client isn't connecting, but when I get the time I will work to remove the ambiguity of my post.

Thanks for the responses!

If that's the case then it's possible. I did notice that it demands you use a separate drive as the backup for itself. Actually it wouldn't even use the RAID controller since it considers the RAID as part of itself...weird.

If you wanted you could install an internal hdd for backups.Just when your going through the process, select the disk that you want the backups to got to(think it's the advance tab bottom right).WHS11 will dedicate this disk just for this purpose. And as stated it store these files in VSS It will not however backup disks lager than 2TB's.You can get around this by partitioning a 3TB drive into two separate partions.Or using a third party app such as Cobain,DeltaCopy etc. And yes you can move the client backup folder to whatever location you want so... Another option would be to setup the backup structure from the clients to the server themselves.
