Can I use Windows Server 2008 R2 instead of buying Windows 7?

Thread Starter
I've built a new PC, and I've heard that you can use Windows Server 2008 R2 as an operating system, by Microsoft Dreamspark and because I'm a student I can get it free. Is this true?
I'll be using it for gaming (e.g. Battlefield 3) and programming so I don't want compromises or it not working etc... anyone know anything about it/used it?

Thanks! smile.gif

I suppose it would, but I dont think I'd want to. Without looking deeper into it, I bet there are several security features (IE settings, firewalls, etc) turned on by default that would not be wanted for a workstation OS.

I'm curious, why is it that your dreamspark account has Windows Server but not Windows 7, or even Windows 8?

because Microsoft is nice enough to give a certain amount of software to students, but not the full operating systems so they can just use Windows 7... I don't know, i've not heard of anyone with dreamspark that has access to downloading Windows 7 or 8. It's the software that student ned such as Visual basic that are on dreamspark.

@yanks... thanks for the info. I'm trying to consider every option, since buying windows 7 is so prohibitively expensive (and windows 8 looks so horrible), especially for a student cryingsmiley.gif

I was quickly reading older forums where users had a hard time installing BF3 on W2K8, but that was the beta. 2K8 will likely have more security measures in place, so your mileage may vary

Sever 2008 R2 is no different than Windows 7 for 99% of uses, it just needs to be configured differently.

I recommend checking out http://www.win2008r2workstation.com/

I'm a Dreamspark member and I got access to both Windows 7 Pro and Windows 8 Pro.
