(UPDATED) 3.2 kw chiller unit as a school project - Page 3

I got a little 3kw inverter drive chiller for a wire EDM machine in my shop today, and it made me think of this thread.
I wish I could keep it, but they want it back once I get it going again. frown.gif

Fixed a leak and pressure tested it, just need to evacuate, charge and check it now.

well it turned out that i dont have room for a fan shroud and i think it moves egnough air if it doesent ill install my fan of death mehehehe its big xD but i think its good on that side rolleyes.gif but i scored some critical parts 3 recivers a solinoid and a HPCO rated for 7-30 bar biggrin.gif

heres a used recive wich ive cland oit one time with white spirit and two times wit alcahol wich has bien shaken rigorusly for about 10 minutes so i think that will do and im going to dry it out tomorrw whit presshureized air and a hairdrier thumb.gif it romes 1.5 liters and is socalled made for chfc and hfc gas lol laughingsmiley.gif

also where shold the solenoid vavle be placed i got a bit confused hehe. the screws for the fan mount is flat wood screws they will hold thumb.gif i dont understand why you whant them to be nutted tho. but i can take some pics og all the shaping equipment for metal at ouor school its alot of stuff tongue.gif i can make a computer case if i want some awesome tools biggrin.gif

gief me the inverter chiller for the edm machene it looks so cool altho i dont like inverter drives they have a bad habbit of dying fast but what temps is it made for confused.gif

It's a high temp machine, it just keeps the water at the same ambient temperature the wire EDM machine is in, within .05ºC.
The idea being to keep everything at the same temperature to maintain tolerances.

As far as the drives go, if they are fed clean power, the biggest problem is that the capacitors tend to start to decline after a few years of use, but are repairable if you catch them before something actually blows.
This one was new in 1997, and other than a couple of incidents of refrigerant leaks, hasn't had any problems.
I have another one with a bad drive and compressor, but it is for an EDM machine that doesn't need tight temperature control for what they cut with it, so I'm converting it to a single stage compressor, and manually set temperature controller.

The things are about $6000US new from Mitsubishi, and there is no core exchange for the older R-22 units. eek.gif

I know its funny but I'd remove the last image. The mods don't look kindly on it.

The solenoid goes right before the txv. Highside order would be... condenser > receiver > filter > sightglass > solenoid > txv.

Personally I wouldn't trust wood screws on the fan bracket. The humidity, extreme cold and vibration might loosen them up over time. Just my 2¢

Make sure to use metal sleeves inside the compressor feet. The sleeves should extend 2mm above the rubber.

Caleal.. make sure to post up that ss project.

Looking good there CS.. be careful around Hannibal. axesmiley.png

so what do you think of thise soldier joints here i think it came out perfect :thumb :

so heres the work ive done sofar on the unit and stuff is coming together good i just ordered the 50 plate HX alo heres how the spraypaint came out on the reciver smile.gif looks good

and i still got lots of copper left wink.gif

and heres the 24 7 chiller and yes this will probably be used for a pc wink.gif the compressor was REALLY dirty inside when i took a bit of denaturated ethanol inthere it came out cloudu and dark with lots of particles an copper particles so i will need to use ALOT of time to get that clean bummer but oh well done is done doh.gifangrysmiley.gif this is all for now and thanks for waching smile.gifsmile.gif

I see you brazed a flare'd out pipe. That works, but I'd suggest either getting a pipe swag tool (the press type, not the hammer type, or even one that also does flares) or instead use a slightly larger piece of pipe over it. Its just easier smile.gif

the flares is just to have the brazing flux in thats why i flare my braze joints works like a charm also helps the braizing metal fall into the joint biggrin.gif

Are you using shielding gas when brazing the lines?
