Hi all,
You'll likely notice a few minutes of downtime this afternoon as we deploy a release that will take a little longer than usual to go live.
The most significant change will have a whole new forum dedicated to it! We're launching the mobile version of the site for all users!
You'll notice a new area, called Mobile Feedback, specifically to discuss the mobile site, report any bugs you find with the mobile site, and view some handy guides we've put together to get you started. For now, you'll need to opt in to use Mobile. Eventually, we'll auto-switch users browsing from mobile devices to the mobile version of the site (look for a button at the bottom of every page toggle), though you'll be able to opt yourself out of using mobile if you don't prefer it.
Ready to go? Too excited to read the rest of the release notes? Don't even want to wait for the formal announcement tonight? The quick-start guide is here!
(If the link above does not work, we've not performed the update yet! Stay tuned, it'll go out this afternoon!)
We've also made some overhauls to the Search page, replacing the cumbersome tabs for browsing results in different content types with a set of filters on the left side of the page. We also show more results on a page (25 vs 10), removed the large icons from results to reduce clutter, and will bold your search terms where they appear in results. A number of tweaks have been made to how we determine relevance for search results, which should mean you find what you're looking for faster when searching for a popular thread.
A new module has been introduced to user profile pages, showing images you've recently embedded into posts. We also are now able to import images posted using the BBCode editor for use in Thread Galleries. If you want to hotlink to other sites, you still can, but by default we will copy the image onto our CDN from both editors.
A few misc fixes also made it in:
#10976 - We cleaned up a couple of issues with moved photosets retaining the permissions settings of their former home.
#10977 - We no longer display the name of community album names in the breadcrumb twice.
#11348 - Thread albums, the lightbox, and the /g page will now be more responsive when images are removed from threads (by moderators deleting the post, for example)
#11367 - We resolved a problem that would distort the "search this thread" module if you tried using it near the top of the page and then at the bottom of the page in the same pageview.
#11593 - We addressed a couple of ways that empty photosets could be created after failed image uploads.
Thanks! We look forward to your thoughts on Mobile in the Mobile Feedback forum!
