SSD+HDD Question.

Hey, OCN, I've been looking to upgrade my computer's Hard Disk Drive, and have been looking for an SSD replacement. I have an Internal SSD with A 500GB capicity from samsung at $399. In my opinion, such a price is an outright exaggeration. I have seen many set ups where the SSD is used as a boot drive and drive for the Operating System, and the HDD is used for storage. I was wondering, can one use an HDD to store the program files within Windows 7 the SSD being the boot device? If so, how would one go about doing so?

Change the destination for the install files over to the HDD smile.gif

Oh? And that would allow the SSD to initiate games and such although the data is contained within another drive?

Also, what SSD should one purchase for a computer working on a mATX motherboard, it seems that the term 'Internal SSD' refers to SSDs for laptops.

Never mind the stupid question about 'Internal' SSDs, I apologize as I am inexperienced with SSDs.

Just pick any SSD that isn't mSATA. That's what your referring to when you said internal SSD. They use a different connection for laptops.

Yes you can launch all your games and such from the other drive. My OS is on my SSD's, but all the user files and folders are located on the HDD's. You need to do specifically point the folder locations away from the C:/ drive, but that's it.

My questions regarding SSDs as of now are:

Would I have to install a copy of Windows 7 on the SSD? ( I know that the answer is probably 'yes' )

And how would one go about installing an SSD so that it could actively access and utilize the data kept within an already present HDD?

Yes, just move the program files to your HDD and create a junction point using Link Shell Extentsion. Basically what it does is it creates a folder on the SSD that actually links to the HDD. So when you put something in that one folder that is junction linked to the HDD, it installs everything to the HDD but will show up on the SSDtoo (but not take up any space).
