Windows 7 - Secondary Hard Drive Disappearing

Every since yesterday I have been having my secondary hard drive dissapearing. This can happen either subtly or crash the system. I switched the SATA port and cable it was using, and it seem to work well. Until now, of course. I have Windows 7 set up using "Sean's Windows 8 Install & Optimization Guide for SSDs & HDDs" thread in the "Hard Drives & Storage" forum. I decided to open up Intel Rapid Stoage Technology window and noticed it was still listing the missing hard drive with a green check mark as if everything is fine, even with a rescan. Although the port, port locatio, status, and usage are all listed as unknown.

The hard drive itself is a WD Blue 1TB.

Curious if you have power management set to not turn off the hard drives after a certain period of time.

I set it to never as part of my Windows 7 installation process. So I have scratched that possibility out. Right now I'm seeing if it is a power connector issue.

I went ahead and switched the SATA port again and used a different power connector. Though the power connector is part of the same cable as the previous one, so hopefully the cable itself isn't bad. But I'm sure it isn't since my OS drive is on the same cable as well and isn't having trouble (I think).

Edit: Things seem to be going swimmingly. Though I thought the same thing when I "fixed" it yesterday. So I guess I'm just playing the waiting game.

Had the same issue on an hdd earlier this year. It was a power issue. What i woud do, is remove the hdd, then remove the pcb and check for possible burn marks.

i have a question. is it bad to use 3 split sata power connectors at the same time on one of the connectors coming out from the psu? SO for example there is a sata power cord that splits into 3 sata power connections, will I be able to use all 3 on that one cord to plug into 3 different hard drives or will that possibly damage my hard drive? I say this because that is how I set up things when I conencted my WD Black in and got bad sectors. I sent it in for rma and newegg said I had damaged the sata connector, and I obviously have no clue what I did wrong. I don't remember breaking anything.

I'll check that out the next time the issue occurs or once my PC prime time is over.

I've had this setup going on for a couple of years now and can't say that there has been an issue like you described. Assuming that the issue I am having right now doesn't involve what your issue was, lol.
