Better to have 2 XFX 4890's or a 5800?

Have to option to swap out my 2 4890s for my roommates 5800 since he got a GTX670, would this be an upgrade though? And would it be possible to have the 5800 in CF with one of the 4890s.

I'm pretty sure you have to be in the same series of cards to crossfire them... So, a 4890 and a 5800 won't work together. Regardless, if they did I'm pretty sure the higher card under clocks to the performance level of the lower card.

keep the 4890's they are still decent cards. if you do end up getting the other card you will not be able to cross fire it with the 4890

The 4890s together will give you roughly 25% over a 5870, however the 5870 sports DX11 and better power efficiency and less heat. While it does have DX11 i think truth be told to stick with the 4890s if you are getting the performance you want!

You could take the 5870 (if that is what it is since you said 5800 series) and upgrade to a second down the road. The scaling isn't brilliant, but it's better than the scaling of the 4000 series and will give you a nice performance boost.

Do you think the 5800 will perform on par as the CF 4890s?

I don't play very intensive games(DotA2, 1.6, CS:GO) but i've been having a problem with DotA2 where I can't have any videos or iTunes open in the background because it causes the game to have slight but constant choppiness. If the 5800 can perform at a similar level to the CF 4890s and it fixes that problem I will be happy with the 5800.

which 5800 series are you talking about.... i do see hwo your gpus would be causing choppiness though i have ran many multi gpu setups without any issues (may be more of a hdd problem)

while they use more power and will run hotter id keep the 4890's myself.

Ask if your buddy will let you try it out for a bit... shouldn't take too much to swap it in an see how it runs for a bit

Not sure ATM he is out, just know it's 5800 series. You think that HDD could be causing the choppiness though? I 'm at 700/950GB used and now that I think about it the same thing happens in TF2 when I have any videos(either from youtube or harddrive, both make the choppines happen) or iTunes running in the background.

Yeah it won't be a problem he is giving it to me for free haha(if not it was going to be sitting in a box in his closet!), i'm just posting here to see if it would be a good idea to upgrade to the 5800

What is the GPU usage when playing those games? Because if it doesn't hit 100% usage and you get bad FPS, your cards aren't the problem.
