Last but not least there's also Secure Boot that needs to be disabled. With all those hurdles in place it's enough to deter most people from even trying to install Windows 7 on a Windows 8 machine.
I had to find drivers from a previous laptop model that contained similar hardware in the Windows 8 machine in order to find drivers for Windows 7. Drivers from Intel, Realtek, AMD/Nvidia can easily be found on their respective sites but drivers native to the laptop aren't so easily found and will become increasingly difficult as newer models come out.

The words "BIOS", "secure boot" and "average user" don't even fit together in the same sentence.

The rest of your post applies to almost anything.

Lot of hype! This version of Windows is only worth upgrading to if you are still using XP, Vista, or a pirated version of Windows. Microsoft failed with the Metro UI. The tiles are horrendous and now the average user has to remember more KB short cuts and steps.

Microsoft is not dumb when it comes to manipulation. Microsoft put that upgrade out in the wild at $15 with no control for a reason smile.gif Think of all the XP/Vista users and Pirates who will buy the upgrade at $15, $29, and $39. If I was on XP still and was too stingy to upgrade to Windows 7 when it came out, I would jump right on the low cost option to upgrade to Windows 8 and I would deal with the crappy changes and enjoy the few good changes while reaping most of the benefits Windows 7 had over XP/Vista.

I get Windows 8 free from MS and I still purchased 2 upgrade at $15 legally (Got 2 Dell Latitudes 6 - 8 weeks ago), but I may never use the 2 upgrades. I know of about 17 people (Real people not net friends or forum goers) including my self that purchased the upgrade version and have not used it yet. How could one not resist at $15. And the free media add on...

One of the reasons the Windows phone did bad and continues to do bad, is because of the tile UI! It is horrendous and feels dated and watered down...

Microsoft's methods will get people to use Windows 8, but most will not adopt the Metro UI and move to a Windows phone, Windows RT tablet and adopt the MS store as there only source of digital App/goods.

Microsoft wants what Apple has and that is not going to happen anytime soon, especially with a poorly design UI and market place!

All aboard the MS fail boat! Next stop discontinued island smile.gif

I love windows 7 but I also love using newer tech, so I've been trying and I'll keep trying to use Win 8 until it sticks. So far it didn't work, but I'm on it as we speak smile.gif

I still think it's a steal for those who were too stingy to upgrade to Windows 7 do to cost. Even if a user never intends to use it right away, the $15 upgrade is a bargain...

The article also notes that this figure can also include OEM licenses.

Know what I did with a new Thinkpad X230 that came with W8 the other day? disabled secure boot and put w7 back on it.

yet that still counts as a license "sold"

Wasn't the removal of Media Center due to some European anti-monopoly lawsuit? That's why they also have to provide a N version of Windows that doesn't include Windows Media Player.

Which is exactly how they got the Windows 7 figures they are comparing these Windows 8 figures against.

Exactly like how a person like yourself could have bought a Windows 7 laptop back then, installed XP/Linux/Hackintosh on it and it still counted as a license sold.
