[Ars] Windows 8 sales are good, if not great, at 40 million copies in the first month. - Page 18

Unfortunately one cannot use these figures to project future sales, since after January 31st there's no more coupon and Win8 becomes the most expensive consumer OS ever.

But I digress, they'll just be gouging OEMs after that, who will most likely just respond by taking a cue from the auto industry and "economizing" their products.

Windows 8 Professional is supposed to cost $200 retail at non-promotional pricing. Windows 7 Home Premium costs $180, Windows 7 Professional costs $280, and Windows 7 Ultimate costs $290 retail, current prices taken off of Newegg. Non-sale costs, according to Newegg, for Windows 7 are $200 for Home Premium, $300 for Professional, and $320 for Ultimate.

Okay. Cost of Ubuntu:

1. download
2. 1 cheap burned DVD5
3. install and setup

So, something like twenty-five cents? For Professional? 25 cents. For Home Premium? 25 cents. For.... no need to continue to steal that joke. Point made. Oddly enough, it's exactly the same cost to simply never register a copy of Win7(which means no desktop wallpaper or updates. Oh, well.).

Why did you compare the most expensive W8 version to the "not most expensive" priced W7 version?

lachen.gif Oh the desperation of fanboys. That's really quite pathetic.

Windows 8 Enterprise can be compared to Windows 7 Ultimate/Enterprise.

EDIT:

Which, btw, I think it's great that they've slimmed down the number of versions. The previous way was stupid. I only ever bought the Pro version anyway.

But, really? Whinging about the comparison of Pro to Pro? Get real for crying out loud and stop being ridiculously pedantic and annoying. They're similarly priced. End of discussion as far as I'm concerned.

Win8 enterprise has WHAT over Win8 Pro? Hmm, W2G... (I'm sorely missing it) yeah that's it.

Win7 entreprise vs ultimate? Loads.

Because the literal comparison for each OS are dictated solely by the designation of the software.

Isn't it, Rubers?

Kind of like how W8 pro gives you native Hyper-V virtualisation that was previously only a Windows Server OS feature, or native ISO mounting, etc etc and not even Windows 7 Ultimate gives you that (even while costing substantially more than W8 pro), but hey, who cares about the actual package provided in the software?

Its all about direct name comparisons. even when they've done away with their previous naming /version rollout scheme this time around, therefore making name comparisons literally impossible in the first place.

Isn't it, Rubers?

Yes, "pathetic"....irony tbh.

Edit in response to below:

LOL @ "clawing at a way to make it seem more expensive".

I don't need to make it "seem" more expensive.

The most expensive Windows 7 version costs much more than the most expensive Windows 8 version.

There's no disputing it.

Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise are practically the same:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7_editions#Comparison_chart

There's fewer differences between Windows 8 Pro and Enterprise, though:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_8_editions#Comparison_chart

There's probably double the differences between Windows 7 Pro and Ultimate than there are Windows 8 Pro and Enterprise, though. And there are some Windows 7 Ultimate features in Windows 8 Pro, which is nice.

I really don't see the big deal in the comparison, though. I think GrizzleBoy was clawing at a way to make it seem more expensive. The average consumer isn't going to look up these charts. They're going to see that "Pro" and that's that. But, in the end, I don't give a chuff about what he thinks at all. He's just trying to piss me off because I'm not drinking his Windows 8 koolaid wink.gif
