[Ars] Windows 8 sales are good, if not great, at 40 million copies in the first month. - Page 8

I have windows 8 which we use on our touch screen just to awe our friends. Now that I have a 2012 truck I am going to go get a 2013 truck of the same color and engine because it has a different color interior. It will be the same thing but better because it has a different color lol. Really I dont see any reason to change my other rigs to 8. Its cool and all to have it but its not special. My daughter loves it because its new and feels like we are keeping up with the jones, along with Iphones and sperry shoes and Nike elite socks and coach purses ect lol. Its change and its good with our touch screen and thats about it for me anyways.

Which begs the question, would so many copies have sold if it were £70-£130? Chances are slim.

Windows 8, £30 a pop. 80 million copies = £2,400,000,000

Windows 7, £80 a pop. 60 million copies = £4,800,000,000

Windows 7 is the better OS for Microsoft. Windows 8 isn't doing that well.

The article clearly states that Windows 7 sold better, right? So your post was completely rhetorical. We already know Windows 7 did better, but that doesn't mean Windows 8 is doing "bad"....

So, you can spin the numbers in your pseudo expert analysis however you want, but by most standards, Windows 8 is doing good. Windows 7 did exceptionally good.

I'd like to know something... MS would know how many copies to a decent degree were bought, and they could easily tell how many PC's connect to update servers to get a decent idea of how many PC's are running said OS. Would be very nice to see just how many people pirate Windows.

Windows 8 boots straight to desktop and if you want to get to "Computer" you just need to right click where the start button used to be and click on "file explorer"

It's two clicks, the same amount as you have to do with a start menu.
With the pre-release copy I only used metro once a day. With the final copy I don't even remember it's existence unless someone mentions it.

Same here. I upgraded to Win8 and I really don't understand what all this 'the metro UI sucks' is about. Do like me, don't use it and go straight to the desktop thumb.gif
But one thing is certain, the reboot time is unbelievable, leaves win7 in the dust (on my machine at least) everything else is basically windows 7 without a start button. It takes a little while to get used to it that's true, but it's not a big problem IMHO.

Yeah, but Metro loses in those due to how much further you have to move the mouse.

doh.gif seriously? I've heard crappy arguments b4, but this one is beyond ridiculous.

I found myself having to use those silly charms all the time. Control panel, network settings, wireless connections, shutting down...

Seriously, why couldn't they just incorporate the charms into the start menu... seems so unnecessary to have their own menu.

They are in the start menu, that was his point rolleyes.gif The start menu is still there, just the button has been removed ....

Am I the only one that wants Ballmer out of Microsoft? All he seems to have been doing lately is copying other company's business strategies. The big push for Bing, web-based office, Microsoft stores, hardware development... They are really beginning to become one of those companies that tries to do everything and ends up straying from their roots, which is arguably worse than not evolving at all.
Jack of all trades, master of none.

Desktop shortcuts thumb.gif It takes even less clicks than clicking on the start menu, clicking on all programs, looking for the folder, clicking on the folder then clicking on the program you want to open. If you don't want a million shortcuts on your desktop, put them in organized folders, if you don't want folders on your desktop, download Start Menu 8 or whatever it's called. I've actually seen a few people say they don't want to use a third party app to open their programs, while posting in desktop screenshot threads and they have things like stardock with all their most used programs on.

What are you talking about? You can't shutdown or change network settings on stock Windows 8 without going to the charms menu. By the way, why did they make it such a task to access advanced network settings? Bah. So many weird decisions.

That said, I think someone developed an app that allows you to add some power-state buttons to the start menu, if I recall correctly.

Taking into account that companies need to progressively sell more and more of their products to remain competitive, i would say this is not good. If the previous product sold X, and the current product sold X-n, there's a problem.

Ah, right. But then that brings us back to the question of what the point of the Metro UI on a desktop PC even is?

Windows 8 just feels so unpolished and maybe even rushed to me, it bothers me every time I use it... But we'll see what happens later.
