3 monitor set-up over 2x 5450s

Thread Starter
I was recently give a 2nd 5450 for free so i was curious if i could attach another monitor to the second 5450 in order to run 3 monitors. I won't be using eye infinity, i just need all 3 monitors to be working. I know that a display port is needed but the 5450s i have don't have a DP.

The ports on both 5450s are the same which consist of a VGA port, HDMI port, and a DVI port.

Simple terms

3 monitors running without eye infinity on 2x 5450s. Only vga, dvi, and hdmi port no display port

will this work

2 monitors connected via DVI and VGA to video card 1
another monitor connected via hdmi to video card 2

I think you can buy an adapter for the HDMI to DisplayPort.

Most definitely. However I would convert everything to DVI. Card 1 DVI, HDMI to DVI. Card 2 DVI.

You can run 4 monitors off of such a setup. If you had the DisplayPort versions of the cards plus 2 active DisplayPort-to-DVI converters you could run 6.

As tsm106 mentioned it's a good idea to keep everything digital. Your 5450s can run any 2 outputs at a time; HDMI and DVI are electrically the same so use whichever cables/adapters you have available (or are cheaper to buy), there is absolutely no difference in picture quality.

I thought both HDMI and DVI used the same lane on the card so i only have the option of using one of them. Since i don't have ANY display ports, how would using a active DP to hdmi help?

If needed, this is the card i have

No one said to get a DP adapter, much less an active one?

Get a HDMI to DVI adapter. Use all DVI. It's better that way.
