Some questions

Hey all, just 2 questions

1) Im trying to decide what RAM to get for the Media PC phase 2 in my sig. 1x4GB is cheaper, but is dual channel necessary?

2) Is there any advantage/disadvantage of using the GT220 1GB if I already have an onboard GPU on the Celeron?

Thanks in advance

1) Dual Channel will be faster, but you probably will not notice a difference in a HTPC.

2) Most HTPC OS's will take advantage of GPU acceleration, a dedicated GPU could help a lot. I have the max memory dedicated to my onboard GPU on my HTPC and have 2GB dedicated for a buffer while streaming. It is lag free on my E-350 and ION.

1. I would argue the opposite and say that with an HTPC and on-die graphics like a Sandy/Ivy Bridge Intel chip would provide, or an AMD APU, memory will make a huge difference. The memory's speed limits how fast the GPU can do what is needed. Dual channel literally provides twice the memory bandwidth. It would be completely silly to get a single stick to save a few bucks. I'd specifically recommend this RAM.
It's low voltage, using less electricity. It's low profile, so it will fit underneath any cooling solution that you may use in your build. It's cheap. It overclocks well, so if you want to run it at 2100mhz for that last bit of speed in your HTPC, you can.

2. Yes, there is a disadvantage. If you have your HTPC on all the time, that GT 220 is going to eat up electricity. With modern systems, it could double your idle power usage compared to using on-die graphics. It also will make the inside of your case hotter and the fan will produce noise, things that are never welcome in an HTPC build.

Well, this is the GT220 I have, haven't used it yet so cant confirm temps or noise, but power usage isnt too bad really

It's old and was slow even when it was new. The Celeron's built in GPU is probably comparable.
It's not a lot of power, yes, but a well built HTPC can use less than 40 watts while playing a blue ray or 1080p h264 file, and idle in the 20s or even teens. That's why I said double or more power usage.
It does have a quiet fan, but it's not silent, and it still does produce heat. I just don't see a reason to include it.

Can the Celeron run blu-ray?

It shouldn't have any issue running a blu-ray, an AMD E-350 runs it flawlessly.
