$350 $400 HTPC Build Recommendations?

post #1 of 20
Thread Starter
What i have:
PCI soundblaster sound card,
e-gforce 9600gt
wireless adapter
2tb sata hd
++possible processor

My Amd Athlon II, or Mobo must of went on my current HTPC. Currently nothing is being displayed on any monitor just a black screen with no indicator lights on tower. Fans run on mobo, vents, and graphics card. Tried the onboard HDMI, and the VGA, but still no display.

What im looking for is a tower, compatible ram, an amd quad with the compatible mobo. All In between the price range of 350 to 400, But i can still work with a new AMD athlon II 64

If you guys can help me out i would appreciate it. Because im not to good at this, You guys are experts!

SIlverstone makes that one that I've used before. Alternatively, you can go thicker to support full sized PCIE cards.

Thicker doesnt really matter, because i mean, ill find a place to put it regardless, and i would rather use my PCIE cards

Don't blame you, but you did say thin biggrin.gif

If your looking at full sized htpc cases, then check something like NMedia, or Silverstone's full sized ones.

I have a NMedia 5000B in my living room as we speak with my old C2Q working as a DVR/HTPC/Console Emulator.

If you are only doing this with it. There is no reason for any PCIe Cards, just grab something tiny for the TV and use USB wireless, remote, etc...

I agree with this completely, but I disagree with the CPU/Mobo you chose. The 350 just can't cut it for any CPU intensive task (see Netflix due to its basis in MS's Silverlight), and so anything that can't use the on-board hardware acceleration of the GPU will look like a slideshow. I grant you it works (I have one as a HTPC), but I don't recommend it. A cheap Sandy Pentium G is a better option.

@the OP you don't really need to recycle any of your old tech if you don't want to. You can find a mobo/CPU combo anymore that will handle all your video and sound needs, whether needing HDMI or a 5.1 setup.
