Dual PSU guide?

Thread Starter
So, my nephew wants a PC for Christmas, his mother told him no. To keep him busy, and get a free cleaning of my workshop, I told him if he could cobble together any of the spare parts from any of the partially recycled builds back there, he could have it.

Little did I know he would actually pull it off... almost. His build:

An old dell XPS 400 case
MSI G41M motherboard
Dual Core Pentium E5400 processor with fan
4 gigs of RAM
An old generic DVD writer
A 500GB western digital hard drive.
An old ATI Radeon HD 3870x2 graphics card
A 500w Azzatek PSU

Sadly, it just doesn't have enough power to handle the graphics card. His solution when I told him what was wrong with his build was that he could just join the 375w PSU that was originally in the old dell case and the 500w PSU. I've never actually done this before, and told him he should just have his mom buy him a more powerful PSU. She said no, and we adults have to stick together, so I can't buy one for him either. Now, I can't put it together for him, or my sister will be angry, so he has to do it himself.

My questions:
Would the extra 375w PSU be enough for the build? I think it should, but better safe than sorry.
Is there a good guide I can point him to, so that he doesn't hurt himself or light a fire while he does this?

you could but both the psu are cheap and will most likely explode not because of lack of power but because the rails would be rubbish also i don't think the psus would have any pice power connectors

Bad idea. I've killed GPU's using two PSU's, and it can be quite unstable/unreliable. Get a single, good PSU. thumb.gif

You'll have to get him a new PSU, he doesn't need much... ~500W would be plenty (the problem with your current unit is the fact that it's grossly overrated and most like trashy cheap as well).

Where are you from?... PM your address if you're in SE Europe, I'll send him a PSU for that system.

Well, if I'm going to have to buy him anything, I may as well just go over his mom's head and spoil him this Christmas with a whole new build, since it will cause the same argument either way... After all, he did an inventory and organized my entire workshop in the process, and it was a pretty good build attempt given that the stuff back there is a few years old, and mostly stuff that has absolutely no resale or recycle value.

Or you can take up Original Sin's offer tongue.gif That would solve a lot? Technically not bought. Lol. Welcome to OCN smile.gif

If you're in the States, I have an Antec Earthwatts 380D I will send you. I'm not familiar with that GPUs power consumption, though. Does anybody know if it would work in this circumstance?

Wait what, you have two 5970's? o.0 Lol. It's about making sure the child respects the adult's decision, and for the uncle to back up the mother, which I guess is the OP's dilemma here.
