Another Rookie with an ambition to learn presentation.

Hello folks at OC.nen!

(As usual the text became 200x longer than intended and become more of a personal presentation and a fun story of a weird first try to assemble a desktop computer. If anyone even sees this post and consider reading it, jump down to the buttom to skip the novel if you wanna read the relevant part of the problem itself)*

Just wanted to make a short presentation (if I can) tendency to over formulate my self in a unnecessary way, which I'm working on by the way.
Due to that do I'm the kind of person who always strive for perfection in everything I do, and that has caused a lot of trouble in my life so far, but I also see a great potential with the characteristic if I manage to control it in a balanced way.

I'm totally new to Hardware / Overclocking and so forth so I figured it might be good to get member on a forum where I might stumble on professional recommendations / tips to get a little push in my evolution of understanding computers in a deeper sense. I'm a person of great portion of curiosity and questioning, I'm some-times a little to open-minded but I recently started to put on a skeptic-filter when absorbing information, and question it before accepting it as a fact.

My characteristics, in the aspect of impulsiveness / un-ability of keeping a linear focus or concentrating on one task interfering with a almost manic behavior of digging as deep as possible and over-analyzing details in things that I find stimulating is a pretty straightforward explanation of how I function as a person generally. This characteristics has been in certain cases a great tool of understanding and growing as a person, but in my life so far retro-perspective it has been mostly a curse which lead me to make decisions that created consequences that almost took my life, or actually it did once but lucky we have Ambulance and Hospitals with educated people in the subject so thanks to them, they rebooted my heart one time. I want to believe that with a balance of the polarity opposites of my personality and a way to put them into practice work I can unleash great constructive power that hopefully can be used for a greater purpose for me and others, but the lack of motivation is at hinder as I yet don't know where to focus my attention and enthusiasm into, as I'm semi-interested in everything more or less.

What this has to do with computers one might wonder, but as I explained I built my first computer recently after being a Frequent laptop all my life before, I had no Idea what big ocean (sometimes feels like a swampy-jungle) I dove into. I had never opened the case of a computer before, as my attention where on the software, but when Diablo 3 where about to be released I understood my good 4 year old ASUS (Intel Celeron 2-core) which also took me 3 month's to purchase even if it was a gift (I needed to analyze what the best I could get for the money was.) and my genius idea that it had the possibility to upgrade to 8gb ram further on if needed...:rolleyes; might be a little bit under the threshold of requirements that it was time for an upgrade. And for the first time I thought, "-Hmm, as I never move my Laptop around anymore, why don't I buy a Desktop computer instead as it seems harder to upgrade a Laptop?".

That's when I realized the 8gb ram upgrade announcement was a number that had no relevance to the reality, so I wen't for a Desktop and I wanted to design my own;

Started out with buying a Chassi from a friend, for 40$ on the purchase I got the entire system, so it was a good deal. This was 6-7 months ago. When Diablo 3 was getting closer to it's release date I started to stress as I only had 2gb RAM and a AMD Athlon 64 processor AM+2 socket (GA-MB). and I have to upgrade, i have to upgrade. I started with upgrading the GPU card meanwhile, and payed 60$ in a local retail store for a pretty new designed Geforce 8400GS, true story. And throw away whatever it was. I started to look for retail one's on the net and found a 49?4870 x2 1gb BEAST for like 20$ plugged it in as my PSU was able to handle it theoriticaly. I called the person and said is it really normal that it feels, like the card is 90c degrees? Np he said. BAM, burnt the card, and had no idea back then what I did wrong. (Left Nvidia Drivers before installation.) Late a friend gave me a 3970x2 and that was a huge Improvement. But what irritated me was that the DDR2 sticks for (4x1gb) 8GB costed more each piece than a regular 8GB-DDR3 stick which I understood didn't fit my motherboard. And the Processors was Phenom something that seemed ok, but I started to realize that maybe it's better to by a entire new motherboard, and just place to old components on it and upgrade it piece by piece?

Here is where the digging begun, my first theory was the smartest thing most be to buy a Motherboard which has as many future upgrades as possible so I don't end up in the same situation in 3 years when I need 64GB ram. I dropped that theory when I was thinking of More's Law or that my once so good Cellphone with the intense 3,1 MP camera and possibility to put in 128MB extra memory card!! 2 years later was dustbin material or no longer more worth than the lithium inside the battery itself. And that my cellphone today was more advanced then my old computer. I hypothized that the day I need 64GB ram it's no longer DDR3. It's something entire different, "NANO-PARTICLES OF ENGINEERED, LIQUID PLASMA; where Terra-bytes is a stone-age term" (metaphorically speaking. smile.gif

I set up a budget of 200-300 euros, and I started to search, search, read, search til my eyes bled and I was more confused 3 months later than before I started. I now knew what a PSU was standing for, I now knew "theoretically labeled cards now" that Radeon 7300 was NOT better than 6980 because the 7 was a higher number. So I bought what I from the tight budget what is explained below, except PSU which I had, case which I had and GPU i set for a later upgrade.

First problem, computer is getting warm, someone advised me that fans is pretty good to have (which I had ALL OF THEM BLOWING INWARDS.) Re-arranged for exhaust and saw out trough the plexi a hole for a 220mm side fan blowing inwards. Recommended to not put any filter to block the airflow. The person who gave me the advice didn't knew that I also was a regular Cigarette smoker, and I remember questioning my-self I wonder if it's really good if the cigarette smoke slides straight into the system. I stopped doing that when I begun thinking about warm air + tar and dust. Pretty ironic to quit smoking due to the care of the computers health rather then the 20 Sticks I was inhaling in chains everyday right into my own system. Anyhow, when I begun quickly noticing dust that was hard to remove it was time for a new case, rather than more drilling / dust-filter+fan ordering or **** so I bought a case described in the RIG, irritating enough the case costed 2/3 (145 euros) of my entire system and was after 12hours analyzing which case to buy fighting in my head vs CM Storm Scout 2, Trooper or Haf X /x. All of them had almost similar price except Haf XM that was almost the half price. 1 Week later Trooper which had the same price dropped to 80E, and Scout 2 to 45E which I never could Imagine as it was the latest in CM series, and the money between could have offered me a liquid cooling system, or a better cooling overall for the crappy one for the fan.

*Well, was going to write 5% of what It ended up with as usual, but now it become a fun little story of a person with 0 knowledge fibbing together a system that works pretty decent, but has come to the realization that now it's time to ask for help, and not take any more stupid "rational" conclusions. As you see in the story (if anyone took time reading it) it's pretty easy to realize that sooner or later I will manage to blow up my motherboard trying to down-clock due to high ambient temp it or something hah. If anyone are interested in helping me a made a thread in the GA-990FXA thread. Explaining a "little" bit of a major problem right now concerning GFX card making serious scrambling noise, suddenly from nowhere. (Passive smoking victim?) And god hell it was dust when I moved the parts from the case to the new one, as I didn't dare to dust it off until my intuition told me rather take the chance of destroying anything with a brush (static electricity?) than it collapsing due taking over the #1 spot in the hierarchy list of the households cleaning devices when the former boss was now hiding in the closet beginning to collect dust itself. Most been the darkest period in my Vacuum Cleaners life.redface.gif

Here is the post, where I describe my major? problems with the computer more detailed: http://www.overclock.net/t/1023100/official-gigabyte-ga-990fxa-series-owners-thread-club/3910#post_18701398
