Yikes. They are making a bunch of huge changes all at once... Microsoft has completely lost it's identity... Haha

I'm probably missing something here, but this sounds like a terrible idea. Nobody wants to be forced to pay for an update to their OS every year. Maybe I should give Ubuntu a second chance after all.

OK guys...let me make something clear...if you're looking for "Windows for free" then you will never be happy with Linux no matter how great it really is. Linux is different and guess what...if the majority of you don't like messing with your OS then you'll be in the buntu/Mint/Fedora category which means every 6-12months a new version comes along and the old one gets nothing but security updates. As long as you're cool with that then the community will be more than welcoming. Just don't cheap out...throw a donation in every now and then if you guys can.

ON TOPIC: Eh...depending on how MS prices this and how they handle it then this could turn out OK for them. Ultimately, I think with the stagnation of the traditional computer market there is going to be more changes needed out of MS in order to do more than just survive the pad fad.

Yes they have LTS versions but these do not get new features or updates by default (you can change/add repos to do that but sometimes things go kuput).

Do the new versions require a reformat or are they updates via the package manager yet?

I see this as "12 months for 12.99 a month" for Forever vs 100-120$ every 2-3 years. I will definitely choose the old system.
Also, won't we end up with a laggy brute of an OS, after they repeatedly tack on more and more crap. I feel like this could be ok initially but re-modifying the same thing a million times is not super efficient towards the end. At some point it is better to do a new system.
More people will upgrade more frequently because of the price. I'd rather pay 29.99 every 6 months rather than drop 120 all at one time every 2-3 years

You can update the distro using apt-get dist-upgrade. Upgrading most Linux distros is a non-issue.

I don't really agree, personally. Windows doesn't do in-place upgrades very well. Long times between releases is probably best, unless they figure out a way to update individual components of Windows through their app store, or something. Plus $30 every 6 months would get expensive fast (I don't think they'd push out updates that fast, though).

I tried Ubuntu before and didn't care for it that much. Looked into Mint and I liked it better. Plan on doing system overhaul sometime soon and I think instead of dual booting just install Mint and go from there. Only time will tell.
