Xonar STX or anything in that range won't make a difference for gaming breh. Going for like an Xi-Fi card. It will save you a lot of money.

It really isn't that simple

Here are the three options. The best "gaming" card is the asus phoebus card. It is similar to the x-fi card, but the break out box that it comes with is really helpful for volume adjustment in game. If you are a fps match and the sound is a little bit low, you have a knob to do that with which prevents you from messing around with other audio controls. Plus it filters out ambient noise which is pretty nice.

The asus essence STX is the best audiophile card. The outputs aren't geared towards gaming at all, but it sounds amazing. It even comes with an adapter so that you can still have your gaming headset utilize the card. While Willanhanyard says it won't help you game, I would have to disagree. I use it for gaming all the time, and I can hear where things are coming from and how far. Now that is not to say that it would be as good as the x-fi or the phoebus, but it still works just fine, and you get the audiophile grade sound.

The X-fi card is kind of a mix between the two. It has better sound quality than the phoebus, but not as good as the essence card. The posistioning software is better than the STX, but not as good as the phoebus card. And it does have the advantage of being cheaper.

So it mostly comes down to personal preference.

The Xonar Phoebus functions absolutely poorly. There are quality components on the PCB, but ASUS has crippled the card with terrible software.
For the card's cost, its music playback is sub par at best.

Please explain. When I tested it out it worked just fine for me. Granted I wasn't impressed with the sound quality, but when I paired it with some razer and corsair headsets that were geared for in game positioning, everything sounded great gaming wise.

i heard that the drivers were an issue, but have been getting fixed?

Also, what noticeable difference is there with already high end sound cards?
