Comparing two Samsung 840s

Are these the same drive just one has 6 less gigabytes and no software? The reason I ask is because I would easily sacrifice 6gb for $70.

No. They are completely different drives.

The 840 uses cheaper, lower-grade TLC NAND, which is similar to the kind of flash memory used in flash drives and other low-cost devices. TLC has much lower endurance than MLC.

The 840 pro uses toggle-mode MLC NAND, the same as what the 830 before it used. If you can find a 256GB Samsung 830 on sale (they're about $160-180 on sale), I would go that route instead and save some money in the process.

Samsung's naming scheme is a bit deceptive for these new drives. The reason is that the successor to the 830 is not the 840, but rather the 840 pro. Even though the 840 is currently priced similarly to the 830, the 840 (non-pro) is meant to be a low-end SSD and not a direct replacement for the 830.

If you're already planning to buy a SSD, you compel yourself to do a fresh install of Windows. This is only way to get maximum performance. Then do image, copy disc or what ever you do,so that next time you can just copy on SSD.

Not necessarily. I've moved Windows installations from HDD to SSD and from one SSD to another SSD with no issues. A fresh install of Windows is good, but it's not a necessity for good performance by any means.
