Difference EVGA GTX680 4gb Classified and FTW?

Hi there,

I plan on upgrading my gpu for Chrisitmas, to be up-to-date but also essentially for having more VRAM.

I hesitate between several references of GTX680 4gb, namely the MSI Twin Frozr III, and the two EVGA - the classified and the FTW.

Though I have seen several reviews on the classified on the net, praising it like a golden super duper card, I can't find any review for the FTW edition? Apprently it is said that the Classified is the ultimate top one.
And on paper the specs don't seem any different. The only difference I noticed is that the FTW+ comes with a backplate.

What would be your advice for me to purchase a 4gb 680?

The Classified is factory overclocked higher. The back plate is exactly what it says.. a "back plate", instead of looking at the bare PCB on the back of your card when you install it, there is a fancy EVGA back plate that goes over the PCB.

Thanks indeed... I guess this backplate is not so useful then?

Anyway, it ismy understanding - maybe I'm wrong - that the Classified & FTW models are built for heavy overclocking purposes, and are of not much interest if I plan to use it mainly for gaming, am I right in that?

Now I know that the classified has an improved layout with 14+ 3 VRM phase instead of the reference 4+2, just like the MSI Lightning also adds more phases to handle higher overvoltages.

Now, I really can't find any info on the MSI GTX680 TWin FrozrIII 4gb / OC, and I would like to know if it's a reference layout with just a non-reference cooler, or is the board layout (VRM etc....) is also improved since it's a factory overclocked model.

Indeed the more I think about it the moreI'm inclined towards the MSI one, but it frustrates me that I can't find any review. Please help me guys, any advice is aprreciated. Thanks.

I like the MSI cards. The coolers are better anyways so no need to mount anything on it unless its a water block.

Yup, the Twin FrozrIII cards have an excelent reputation indeed. I know the cooler isgreat, I'm just wondering about the layout of this particular card, is it improved or is it just a reference layout with an OC and a Twin Frozr Cooler.

If you look on youtube you can find some unboxings. Its bigger,The cooler is bigger and the backplate is pretty awesome looking. Would of gotten one but I like my 680 for free lol.

im staying around for this. i was going with a 2GB FTW, then i decided its not feasible not to pay $30 more and get a backplate and 2GB more VRAM. i'm still thinking of the MSI lightning tho, that looks like a great card. also just for one monitor, i believe 2GB would be enough, but the difference between makes it very unsensible to not to buy a 4GB one.

also, does the lightning have more VRM? from what i counted the classified has the most VRMS on the market for any 680, then comes the lighting/twin frozr 3, then the FTW model. so if you are planning on heavy overclocking i would go for the MSI because their coolers are the best. the classified afaik has a vapor chamber which is worse than any non-stock cooler.

Yeah I've seen one unboxing so far, it was not very well made as the guy did it outsde for some reason. But these cards are very appealing to me.

Yeah the Lightning is still very appealing indeed... I don't know about its number of VRMs. I know the classified has 14+3 which is enormous. I think this is the one with the most VRM phases, though I'm not certain.

Well I do like to tweak and overclock but I don't do LN2, and I've read several reviews saying the Lightning is fantastic but not worth the price if you're not into LN2 and heavy OC. At the end of the day my main purpose is for gaming, and as you said, why not throw a couple of bucks more and have 4gb, the demands in VRAM increase so fast, my 1.5gb were an enormous amount one year ago and now I hear about game requiring 2gb+ of VRAM when maxed out even at 1080p. All the ATI 7970s are 3gb... There is Crysis 3 coming next year also,; and judging by what i've seen, it will be VERY demanding lol.

Did you check out anymore? There is one out there that shows you everything about the card.

Yes I checked the video indeed. The guy has the same case as me lol. The card doesn't have a backplate though, its's a shame. But there are holes for screwing one on aparently. I wonder how you can purchase a backplate separately as I don't think the card's length is the standard reference one? Or is it? Anyway, the unboxing was cool but still just an unboxing, nothing on the temps, perfs etc.

Man, i'm beginning to wonder if I won't stick to my first idea and buy myself a second used 580 Matrix to go SLI with my system. But I'm frustrated with my 1.5gb memory, it seems short in the long run. I may be better off with a single 680 4GB, my perfs would be lower now but at least I would be more comfortable with 4gb for the future.
