Performance problems of 7970

It is unusual. I have the latest BETA 8 drivers. When I play Serious Sam 2 the FPS drops to 30 when my GPU usage is only 40-60%. And it drops as if that was vsync that is limiting it, not low FPS. Same for Planetside 2. It drops to 40FPS but not 30 there and the usage is only 70-80%. Why isn't 100% used and vsync applied like that?

I would start by filling out your rig so we can see what you are working with. Assuming no bottlenecks, do you play other games? I am not familiar with serious sam, but I have heard some games vsync caps at 30 rather than 60. Have you turned vsync off to see what the GPU usage is? Have you played demanding games (I cant say the games you are playing are not, but I havent tried them) like BF3 to see if you are getting 100% GPU usage?

No, there are definitely no bottlenecks. smile.gif Over 20 games tried on max settings from 2010-2012, all run on over 60 or way over 60.

I forgot to mention that that is on the max settings. They cap on 60 not 30. In Planetside the cap jumps from 40 to 60 too.

I am not getting 100% CPU usage but doesn't vsync work for graphics performance not for CPU performance? Oh an I don't have Battlefield 3.

Do you have the 12.10 CAP 1 installed. this improves single GPU performance too and improves game compatibility with the latest games.

I guess I am a bit confused. If you turn vysnc off, what happens? Your GPU is only going to work as hard as it needs to. Because I am not familiar with these games, I cannot speak for how hard your GPU must work. For instance, if I play BF3 on my rig at 1080p with vsync on at high, my GPUs are not going to run at 100% because they do not have to. If I turn everything on ultra and turn vysnc off, both GPUs work at 95-100%.

I don't. I just download and install it, no need to configure anything in Catalyst?

Will the pack still work if I want to configure something in Catalyst manually?

Serious Sam goes to ~80-120FPS then, and my GPU is on 100%. So it caps the FPS on 30 for no reason.

its not really a performance problem with your GPU then. Serious Sam 2 doesnt look like too demanding of a game. As for Planetside 2, what CPU and OS are you using? Is it 64 bit? You may want to look at this:

Maybe it's a CPU bottleneck, try overclocking your CPU as much as you can, i played Serious Sam on my 7970 with a stock clocked i7 960 and when i overclocked that 960 to 4.1Ghz it made a huge difference in terms of performance biggrin.gif
