ok let me phrase it this way: if you like having battery life for more than 40 minutes and prefer not to burn your legs while playing, a tablet or smartphone is a better when there is not a table and outlet to plug your laptop into. of course, it's really all subjective because there are definitely masochists out there who enjoy burning themselves for short periods of time rolleyes.gif
most people actually use their computers in more or less the same way. the browse the internet, the write emails, the might use Office. yeah there are certain professional out there who require specialized hardware and software, but they are the 1%.
and because people mostly do the same types of things we can make assumptions about what is going to be most efficient and effective for them. doesn't mean they always choose what is most efficient or effective obviously.

Why the hell are you acting as if adding a touchscreen-optimized UI will take away mouse and keyboard-optimized UIs?

im not a w8 hater. i support it for it's fullscreen support and the addition of touchpad gestures. i just think touchscreen laptops+desktops are a gimmick. they should have focused on touchpads instead.

as far games go though, touchscreens could definitely influence how game ui's play out. look at the civ demo boxyche posted. that ui is optimized for touch
. it would be a sad day for pc gamers if we end up with glorified wii games.

Stop putting words in my mouth, and actually read what people say.

And how can Windows 8 improve touchpad support? Precision of the touchpad is up to the hardware and drivers. The OS has provided gesture support.

And just because Civilization 5 included a touchscreen UI, doesn't mean they got rid of the keyboard and mouse UI. It's still there, the touchscreen UI is a secondary option. Why can't both coexist together, switching between interfaces as necessary?

Because people assume other people shouldn't be catered for. If it's not what they like, it shouldn't exist.

because you can't have a game that rewards precise clicks and reaction time with a touch interface. it's just to clumsy and imprecise and the lack of keyboard severely the number of commands you can quickly do. so to get it to work on touch you'd have to severely limit the precision required in a game like starcraft to get it to run well on a touch interface. which means competitive rts and fps would basically cease to exist.

i have no inherent problem with touch games, i just don't want to see my favorite pc games become casualized touch games. i don't care if people create new touch game series

Just to clarify so that others learn. Windows 8 does effect touchpad support, as drivers are directly linked to the opsys they are used with. What is a driver? In it's base form, a driver is a bit of machine code that is (essentially) inserted into the kernel. Modulated software, that's what drivers are. The driver itself is only as strong as the kernel that uses it, in the end they are one in the same. So yes, Win8 could improve or damage touch pad support. Though in the case of a physical item, it is generally more hardware related when we get into precision and/or how well a device works. Firmware/Software/Drivers can only do so much.

you assume they wouldn't have to alter gameplay to accommodate. this is why tablets and pc games offer drastically different types of gameplay
