Taking the plunge

Thread Starter
I am prepared to sacrifice my free time, disposable income, and even sanity to beating on some hardware and software until it's fast. biggrin.gif Starting with something of a junk/salvage rig to learn the ropes, but looking to move up in the world soon.

I'm also interested in the HWBot and Folding@Home teams and would appreciate any guidance for getting involved in those.

Ouch. But yeah man, it goes fast when you start loading up on high end stuff. Can you go used or salvage for parts to save a buck?

That's a drag man. Nothing wrong with a little age, tho. I'm rocking 478 for now! Cutting edge Northwood circa 2004. Just to learn the ropes anyway. Plus side is you do now have a good excuse to upgrade.

Welcome to the bottomless pit of building. I have lost track of money spent on my last rig. Lets just say I could have bought a car instead.

My advice would be, if there is a Micro Center or any store like that near you, keep an eye on their clearance and open box sections as you can get a real awesome deal some times.

Welcome to OCN, and the our crazy world.

That's so funny! I have totally been stalking the Micro Center site for deals and price changes. Their 3570K price is nice! Plus $40 off on the mobo. I've been pretty tempted. But then I'd need another case, PSU...can't break up my Frankenstein 478 rig just yet...and so it begins...

Thanks for the welcome.

Thanks for the welcome.

That is a really good deal. For cases I will say (pretty sure you are already doing it) check their open box section for cases. The black phantom you see in my sig (RadioActive) was picked last year from micro center open box for 89.99 and when I opened the box, I could tell that who ever returned it had touched nothing inside.

I caught my case on sale plus a rebate so I saved over $40

Yeah seems crazy to pay full retail for some stamped steel and plastic when there are so many deals.

It'd be kinda fun to build my own case, but let's not get crazy now.
