On a side note, does anyone have #'s of software sales of the PS3 vs 360 worldwide since launch? Worldwide is key of course.

360 is at 71 million and PS3 is at 70 I believe are the latest numbers. Generally Sony tends to gain Jan-Sept but when the holiday season kicks in the huge American sales put the 360 up for a couple months. PS3 may end up passing the 360 but we'll likely be less then six months out from new consoles when it does.

The only problem with their blu ray win is that it's happening now. The public at large is transitioning to streaming/digital and disc sales are dropping. Way too much money was spent on a win that has not netted Sony a single dime of profit. The PS3 losses literally wiped out every single dollar they made on the PS2. In fact Sony lost more money on the PS3's first four years then Microsoft did with the original Xbox which at the time was considered pretty much as bad as it gets.

Here is Sony's latest shipped numbers. Obviously doesn't include the last month. Can't find Microsofts but I'm almost 99% sure its 71.

http://gamesfiends.com/2012/10/19/microsofts-xbox-360-shipments-pass-70m-units-worldwide/

NVM found it. Microsoft at 70 mil as of Sept 30, Sony at 70 as of Nov 4. About a million difference then most likely with holiday sales put in.

I don't know why you feel the need to appear as a fanboy on here. You really need to go back and look at your facts Sony not releasing a PS4 is like Canon not ever releasing a new Camera......its almost crazy. Saying that the PS4 failed sales wise is also crazy.

First you said that Heavy Rain and Uncharted a long with MGS sucked a long with the rest of the PS3 exclusives and that Gears and Halo are better now you're trying to say that Sonys Blu Ray success isn't kicking in until now about 5 years later...I find it absurd that someone would go to such lengths to defend something but it wouldn't be the first it almost reminds me of politics....just a bunch of lies.

Wow. I've been trolled by 4 people for posting a small, factual post. (That I assumed would have been fairly well known.) Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

As for why we're comparing the PS3 and Xbox360 5 years or so after release. It's because it's around this time when both games have had their hit games released and are continuing to release top of the line games so now we can really compare them. Before release you can only really compare them hardware wise which to me means nothing as I play games for the gameplay not for the graphics.
You can;t even compare the Xbox720 or w/e it's called to the PS4 as no games have been announced for either......
I picked up Shadow of the Collosus not too long ago and even that game looks beautiful artistically at 640*480 and the gameplay is very enticing and keeps you wanting more. I could care less about graphics, graphics are only the icing on the cake.
Also, whoever called fps'ers dead on the PC needs to go take a look at ESEA, CEVO, and the other leagues.

That being said, the Playstation is not the only thing keeping Sony afloat. They are still one of the world's largest consumer electronics manufacturers and one of the largest conglomerates.

I've provided several links now, yet its not clear from their posts that those 4 even read them. And forget about them providing any evidence of anything themselves. Nope, but unsupported assertions are available in plenty.

Clearly we are in fanboy territory, so allow me to gracefully exit this thread with a few final quotes which back up why Sony had doubts about bringing out the PS4 before the PS3 was 10+ years old.

Sony’s Chief Financial Officer, Masaru Kato, has a good idea of where Sony went wrong with the PS3. “It is no longer thinkable to have a huge initial financial investment like that of the PS3,” he said.

The PlayStation 3 is finally paying for itself, but Sony has had to endure a long and difficult lesson: Four and a half years is a long time to wait for an expensive system to turn a profit, especially when you consider that the previous console generation was seriously winding down after four and a half years on the market.

Edit: And for anyone just joining, obviously the PS4 is now uncancelled and will be out soon, as I mentioned in my initial post

From what Ive seen it may not be called PS4 but Omni.

I doubt they will stray from the PS numbering scheme because of the popularity behind the numbered PlayStation's but, Sony is sorta kinda restructuring so who knows.

PS4's codename was/is Orbis. I doubt it will be called that or PS4 however.

Sony never cancelled the PS4 either. Absolutely r idiculous rumor/thought. It's one of the only divisions making them money there is literally zero reason why they would do that.
