This is what I ended up ordering. It will be used at less that 50% load max. but it needs to be rock solid. No OC. The SSD will be in Raid 1 and the HHD will be Raid 5, and I plan to use one of the HDD's as a hot spare, 3 for the array and one as a spare. This should tie me over until next year and I think I will go for a DELL PowerEdge™ R720xd with real raid and remote management.

This will replace an OLD OLD PE2950 with dual xeon 5160 procs. the only thing that i will miss is the remote access card on it.

What do you need a 1200w psu for? Wow, you're using soft RAID?

1200watt no real need I am sure that I can get away with 850W.

Soft raid... well I ran out of budget. I will be using the integrated raid. I know lame. but dont have any more money in the budget.

What do you suggest

What is the server for? If its to hold a DB, it's gonna be the most powerful slow DB ever. You know what I mean? If it is for DB work, you need hardware RAID.

Trim the fat. You don't need/waste on a 1200w psu. You're not using gpus so all you need is to feed a standard 150w cpu and drives, add a bit of padding I figure 500w tops.

You don't need the WS board. Get the regular P9X79. All the Asus X79 class boards are top end as it is. That's where I'd start.

If you are set on RAID 5, I'd at least look at the cheap Dell Perc cards, it's been so long since I looked at those but I'm sure the storage forum guys will have you pointed the right way.

Why would you use normal desktop parts like G.SKILL to produce a "reliable" server? I'd opt to go with a Xeon series CPU and some ECC RAM if you're doing alot of database work. NH-D14 is absolutely overkill as well, just get some low profile heat sinks...
