Dual Boot Question

Thread Starter
I am building a computer for a customer of mine. And no matter how much i talk to him he is admant about wanting windows xp for his personal use because of how used to it he is and how work used xp and so on. He wants a gaming rig for his son though, and I told him windows 7 is the best route to go for that because windows xp will cripple his hardware.

The only option is to load windows 7 and windows xp onto the computer if i can't convince him. My question is, do I need 2 drives for this? Or can I partition a single drive in half and install windows 7 on one half and xp on another? Will there be any driver issues?

If i need 2 drives, will he need to go into the BIOS and choose the drive with xp on it as primary boot drive every time he wants to use it(and vice versa with his son and windows 7)? Or will the computer show both boot options on screen after POST and let him choose like that.

No you will not need two drives. One will do. Install windows 7 and create a partition. Then install xp to the partition. It will not affect drivers or anything like that. I am a huge fan of multi booting and is very simple.

The computer will show you both options on the boot screen.

You can partition a single drive, install a OS, then partition the drive and install the other OS on the empty partition. I haven't had any problems with drivers dual booting. The last thing I dual booted was win7 and 8 so I'm not sure if XP will be as friendly but I was able to choose what OS was the primary and a time to wait before booting straight to the primary OS. So after post it would wait a certain amount of time to let you choose what OS to boot, if time ran out it would just launch the primary OS.

It's actually harder to use separate drives since the BIOS looks at one HDD at a time. If both OS's are on one partitioned HDD, Windows pretty much does the rest. Install XP first on a smaller partition like 40Gb then install Win7 on the second partition. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Now when the computer boots up, it asks you which one you want to run.
