HD 598 vs AKG Q701 ampless

Hello I bought a pair for HD 598 recently new for $170 but haven't opened them yet. I've seen a lot of people praise the Q701 but they say they need a amp to truly enjoy them and that's out of my budget to buy a amp at this time. Question is what's the better headphone amp-less to use with my old X-Fi.

HD598 without a doubt.

Both will perform horribly with an old x-fi card, the difference between my xfi titanium and the x-fi usb premium hd with my HD558 (essentially the same as the HD598) and the difference was staggering, with the vanilla titanium produced strident and very grainy highs, had a thin midrange and a very unpleasant bass which did not go deep enough when I changed to the x-fi premium HD (which has its own little headphone amp section albeit not all that powerful) is plenty for the HD558 and the sound produced is amazing, the mids are a bit more forward and have more body, the highs are tamed and have higher level of detail, there is more depth to the soundstage and the bass is what improves the most out of all the characteristics.

The 598's will perform good without an external amp. I've used them with ipods, and other weak sources and they do fine. They should be safe with your current soundcard, if you dont like what you hear you can upgrade to a Xonar Dg.

I just got them in a lot cleaner and bassier than my HD-555 + I got them even cheaper then in my post somehow amazon gave me $30 credit of the headphones when i know I had none + that $30 gift card + they came in late so they gave me $10 credit making them $147 if you count the gift card.
