Building my first rig help

Thread Starter
Hi, I already have a few things and I would like some help to finish my computer. It will be primarily used for gaming.

I have:
Motherboard: ASUS P8Z 68-V LX
Case: Cooler Master Elite 430
RAM: PNY Optima 8GB (2 x 4GB)

Also, a friend of mine gave me his cheap old NVIDIA-GeForce-GT220 if that could be of any use at all..

I'm willing to put around $500 into this but I can do more if I need to.

Thanks wink.gif

Good start. What kind of games/programs were you planning on running? And also are you planning to overclock?

Well I am hoping to run some games like skyrim ect and get a decent frame rate but what I want most is to be able to run Arma 2 / DayZ standalone and stuff like WoW, diablo 3, and pretty much most of the new games coming out.

edit: I can hold off on things like monitor, hard drive, keyboard, mouse and stuff like that until I have the main stuff covered.

edit2: sorry forgot about overclocking.. and I have never done it before and If it will give me a performance boost then I will try.

I noticed you didn't mention a CPU and assume this is something you need to buy. If you are gaming then (based on my experience and the rig I've built) you get more value for money investing in a better GPU than say going for a CPU with hyperthreading. Can I suggest you pick yourself up a 2500K and then maybe a HD 7950. This will be a gr8 rig that will play anything you want.

Thanks for your reply.

Would Intel Core i5-3570K be a better choice because it is only $2 more than Intel Core i5-2500K

EDIT: Also, I'm wondering if there is a big difference between 7950 and 7850 because the price has a huge difference.

If your not going to overclock go with the 3570k but if you will I've heard that the 2500k overclocks like crazy but theres always the silicon lottery so keep that in mind!

Just make sure your board supports the 3570K. I noticed its a Z68 board not Z77 therefore you might need to get a bios upgrade thumb.gif

BTW - The 2500k overclocks alot easier than the 3570K and less heat.

Ok. Sounds good. Here's a list of what I recommend for a 400 - 500$ build.

If you want to play any new games coming out, you might want to increase your budget.

edit: didn't get those posts till now. I would recommend the 7950 and the 2500k. Great products.
