[VR-Zone] Microsoft's Security Essentials loses certification after badly failing AV-TEST - Page 2

Oh noes. redface.gif

Hopefully Microsoft sees this and does something about it, especially considering that Windows 8 comes with it by default.

I use Windows 8's default antivirus (basically all the features of MSE) and I have MBAM scheduled to run once a week. When I used WIndows 7, I had MSE and I haven't gotten any malware in years.

The trick is to think twice about what you download...there really isn't any elusive secret method to keeping your PC clean.

I see it that way it may be weak at protecting against newest threat´s, but main reason i went back to MSSE is cause of usability.

I had a trail of Kaspersky once and i had to deactivate it to install some games or software, then i used Comodo for like a month and same Games or programs wouldn´t install correct cause parts of the installer where Sandboxed or completly blocked.

So for me it was back to MSSE it just stays in the background and doesn´t bother you with Popups or Programm errors.

Even if it´s protection is weaker it´s ok for a homeuser i guess, and there is still the common sense thing i hardly ever had a virus anyway it may have been 1 or 2 times in like 5 years where a download was from a suspicios site and had a virus in.

I use norton and find it works great, I am happy to pay the 60 dollars a year to cover my pc, laptop and the wife's pc to know that they are secure. Glad to see it scored well and makes me feel even better about my choice.

As I was once told there is no AV that can protect a user that is uneducated on the threats of the internet. Like one other said I have been using it for yrs and I havent had a virus scare since then. Thats what has scared me the most I haven't had to reformat since sometime in mid 2010.

The best legally free ones are AVG Free and Avast Free. As Avast has been nagware as of late, I'd go for AVG Free.

Agreed, that is why we use Avira Professional at work as we have very sensitive data that if tampered with or leaked outside of the intranet the company would be in deep crap. MSE has never had a great detection rate and should be avoided until they fix that (doubtful) and can compete with the others that scored high.

I still prefer MSE plus MalwareBytes.

As usual, the best 'anti virus' is knowing how to safely browse the web.

I use MSE not because it performed great, but because of integration with Windows and because it ran equally well on crappy or super powerful machines.

Plus it's really easy to get ahold of.

For more serious virus scans I always use Spybot and Kaspersky Trial.
