Hey guys.

I have two chips and two boards, and I recently picked up a corsair h100. As the title implies, I need to know which chip/board combo will give me better overclocking results.

CPUs :
AMD Phenom II Quad Core 970 Deneb 3.5GHz Black Edition

AMD Vishera FX-6300 Hex-core 3.5GHz Black Edition

Mobos :
MSI 890fxa-GD70

MSI 970a-G46

Please discuss at length. This will be my first overclock, and I'd like as much information as I can get.

Vishera cpus overclock better than phenoms. Do not combine a Vishera with an old AM3 chipset like the 890fx since Vishera's don't run at full speed with those. Also the MSI 970a-G46 only has 4+1/2 phased vrms. That means you won't be able to go very far. In my sig there's a link to the AMD VRM database. There you can see which boards are good for overclocking. The more VRMs , the better.

I didn't mean the frequ I meant the integer speed. I've heard this from allot of users...

So if I'm reading your VRM info link correctly, the ASRock Fatality 990FX is the best board for trying to overclock either of the listed chips?

Because I haven't exactly unpacked the MSI 970a-G46...

No. A 12+4 vrm phase count on a 990fx is just marketing. As much as I understand it's just some extra vrms on it to make it sound cool but it doesn't make a difference between 8+2 and 12+4.

Alright... good. The red on those fatalitys was not pleasing to my eye. Btw, thank you so much for your time.
Are there any particular 8+2 phase boards at which I should be looking?

Gigabyte makes very good am3+ mobos. If you don't plan on crossfire then the ga-970a-ud3 is a good cheap board. If you want crossfire then get the 990fx-u3.

Ok guys. Thanks mostly to noobhell up there ^ I've decided to return the MSI 970a-G46. I'm looking at two different boards to take the place of it.

GIgabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128514

or

MSI 990FXA-GD80V2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130649

What are the key differences between these boards? I mean, I saw dixson up there slagging MSI boards, but the ones I've had have all been solid at stock, anyway... Plus, I've a touch of OCD (lol), and the MSI would match the build just a *little* bit better.

Opinions?
