Choosing parts for a good 3d machine - Page 5

Honestly I have been trying to look at the whole picture at the same time. But it is difficult.

1. Get a raid card or deal with onboard raid
- If onboard deal with marvell as a secondary controller with reduced sata 6 speeds ( the secondary raid would be for programs that I dont use as often as to not plug up the ssds also possibly for caching files ( simulations, exr sequences etc.) Even this is being pretty cost effective. As for the intel raid well, I trust intel's raids even coming up to now.

2. The boards I have seen so far I like but im honestly not impressed. I would have thought by now a lot of things would be different, and i saw alot go down as my p6t started showing signs of its age, ( when usb 3 came out, and sata III and so on) I also would have thought ram would have gotten better by now but most people seem to still be using the same ram as I purchased four years ago

I know that there arent that many performance gains but still, i would have thought they'd get their stuff together and start putting out something new like ddr4 even.

I never thought I was an amazing enthusiast, but I do enjoy tech, and when i have a chance I am always looking, newegg pricewatch toms, oc.net hardocp, extremesystems, you name it I lurk it.
As to the board are they necessary? perhaps not. I have seen good things overall for those boards though. I will be overclocking this thing, so I guess concerns are VRM and if it can do relatively the same but under lower voltage setting. \

So theres that problem and now a new one. Since the rig is going to upwards of 1400$ including the case and psu, I am wondering if i bought the right one. ( I just got a seasonic 850, and it looks pretty great overall, but now I dunno if I should futureproof for something closer to 1000 so I can have a dual monitor setup ( something I have been wanting to do with a new rig). In short I have alot of questions still.

It's true if you get the 3930k you will get a supported future socket for the next generation. But one thing to keep in mind, if you only get it because you want it to be future upgradeable and have a tight budget, there is no point. If you already see the 3930k as expensive and get that and a 2011 motherboard only so it's still upgradeable to the future cpu's, you're still looking at a very high priced CPU for that socket. Get a 3930k because you want to and need that, not because you want it to be future proofed for the nex-gen socket ONLY if you are on a tighter budget. If you have a high budget, then feel free! I hope you understand what I am saying, it's easy to misunderstand. BTW 3930k is already a beast, will do well as far as future proof goes.

You don't need a bigger power supply to power more monitors, you'd only need more power say if you were running multi gpu's 20 fans, 10 hdds all at the same time. Also I am assuming you are sticking with the gtx 465 you have currently? If so your card should easily run 2 monitors at the same time, since you aren't gaming it should be perfectly fine.

One more note, check tiger direct for the 3770k I believe it is 249.99 there if you decide with that processor.
EDIT: The price has gone up. mad.gif

Actually that tigerdirect $249.99 3770k deal was only for black friday, it's still $319.99 as of now.

yeah I have been wanting to do a dual monitor ( dual gpu not sli just one per monitor) for about 5 years now, My old machine was running 8 HDDS and the 465 plus the overclock. I just dont want to have to redo buying a psu a year from now if i get the cash for the dualies. I have seen other machines pull about 900w ish with 5 fans 2 cards and a bunch of hard drives. I wont necessarily be putting it to max but cushion would be nice. I am trying to update the budget to reflect these possibilities.

well if you dual gpu i believe its better to sli and have both monitors plugged into one card. could be mistaken though. But if you did get say a 1000w you would have a lot of headroom for expanding your system to whatever you see fit.

i worry about there being stuttering in the update process since the cards are bridged as opposed to having one card on each monitor.

Where did you hear about this?
