AMD cpus read temps differently, so 50c is like 70-80c on an intel.

I get what you're saying, but that's not correct. They don't read differently, they have a different safe operational threshold, though. For most AMD cpus, you don't want to run them past 62C for extended periods of time, or the CPU can suffer damage/degradation. yessir.gif

OP, if you aren't already, use isopropyl alcohol to clean of the residue on the cpu and h50. Otherwise, try just putting a bit of thermal paste in the middle and letting in spread between the processor and h50. I've had great results with my h50's, and they've been going strong for years now. My xeon's still idle in the low 30's and load in the low 50's Celsius .

AMD's max core temp is 62c while Intel's is like 100c. Also core temp (tctl max) readings on amd cpus are not a real number, as in not a real thermometer anywhere on the chip, it's calculated with some complex formula.

Well it was a fresh application as of 1 day ago with Arctic Silver 5. Are you suggesting that I might have used too little? I spread it pretty thin.

Oh, that's just the TJmax. Their safest operational temperatures. Doesn't mean the temps that are read are any different. Different architecture = different operating temps. thumb.gif

Too little = bad performance, too much = bad performance.
I was merely saying, the way I've applied TIM to my h50's I've had great results. I have no idea how and if it will benefit you.

I got great results with my H50 in P/P with Stock Corsair Fans. Going from a CM Vortex 752 and a Stock AMD, it's quite a bit better, nothing amazing, but much better. I was idling around 40C with the 752... the H50 brought me down to 29C. Loads at 3.6Ghz X4 maxing out at 40C gaming just now. Sometimes it hits up to 45C though, if its an extended session and the heats on. I think I'm 51C Prime Stable too which is nice.

My H50 is quite old as well, not sure why your having such bad results, especially in comparison to stock, as my stock AMD fan from a 1090T can't compete with my H50, and 752 was an incremental upgrade over AMD's stock cooler... For your temps to be similar from Stock fan to H50 I dunno...

Perhaps I used too little thermal paste. I spread it -very- thin as I always have, but I'll remove the heatsink tonight and add another rice-sized dot to the center and see if that improves anything.

Yea, if I get temp issues I always try reseating first, just to be sure. I hate doing it with the H50 though, as the way it mounts doesn't give me a lot of control to make sure I place it at a good angle and such... I always get nervous I've botched the seating even if the paste itself is done perfectly... (I've tried both spread and rice grain dot... same results but I find the rice grain just much easier to do smile.gif )
