WD Cavier Blue Buzz Noise

Thread Starter
I have went through like 8 Cavier Blue HDD and i always notice a buzz noise when it starts up and also i would hear it every couple of mins and it would freeze my computer for like a quick second.

Does this still happen i am building my new computer and i want to know if WD is worth going back to or go with seagate
post #2 of 6
If your on your 8th hard drive and still have a buzz noise it is possible this is normal behavior or something else is wrong with your computer. Hard drives to typcially make a noise while spinning up however it should not be very loud and you should not hear clicks.

Is your PSU adequate for your system?
Are the 8 drives all from the same batch or different models/ purchase dates?
Have you tried to run a diagnostic on the drives to check for bad sectors using a program such as HDTune?
Are these your boot drives or just data drives?
Do you regularly experience terrible bad luck in other aspects of life? mad.gif

Please answer all of the above and we can go from there.

If you try to scan the drive for bad sectors and post the S.M.A.R.T. results someone here may be able to help identifying if your drive is bad. Your PSU should be adequate for this build.

Post Sector scan results
Post S.M.A.R.T. results.
Post hard drive model/capacity and the seek and burst rates.

All of the above tests can be done using a program such as HDTune.

I have personal bias towards certain hard drive manufactures partially because i maintain over 200 servers/computers at work and see the drive failures from different manufactures. This is the enterprise world though so consumer products are an entire different arena. I want to focus on the facts and not interject my bias ha ha.

Sometimes it's hard to tell what component is making a sound within the PC case. Double check to see if it's the hard drive by running your PC with the hard drive unplugged. I've had to do this before to isolate an annoying noise.

Something you may want to consider - the HDD mounts. I've seen it where the side panel vibrated slightly when drives were spinning up, causing a buzzing sound. Choosing a case with rubber HDD mounts and higher build quality can help stop that.
